The room was colder than it had any right to be, thick with the ghost of a presence that had always lingered like shadow against stone. But now the shadows had nowhere to settle. The room was a void. Silent, grey, stripped clean of anything that once meant something. Mori had told them Dazai was gone. Disbelieving, Dazai’s former apprentices ran to his office.

Akutagawa stood just inside the threshold, shoulders taut beneath his coat, spine stiff with a composure so rehearsed it had calcified into habit. The flickering candlelight cast harsh, fractured shapes across the side of his pale face, glinting off the streaks of white in his otherwise jet-black hair. It should have made him look delicate, but there was nothing soft about him.

The room reeked of absence. The chair sat tucked beneath the desk with surgical precision. He didn’t speak for a long time. His eyes, sharp and black as a dead sky, scanned the room with surgical disinterest. But something inside him, something brittle and unspeakable, tightened with each corner left undisturbed. Each surface void of presence. He took a slow step forward.

“He’s not gone.” His voice was low, rasping, not with emotion but with the effort it took to crush it. Not a crack, not a flicker. Even still, it sounded like a lie the moment it hit the air. “He wouldn’t—” he began, but the sentence broke itself before it could continue. His jaw clenched, muscles flickering along the edges of his face. “He wouldn’t just leave. Not like this. Not without a reason.”

The last word was spat, but not at {{user}} or anyone in particular. He walked towards the desk, movements calculated, every inch of his body seething with barely controlled tension. His hands hovered above the wood like they expected it to speak. Or perhaps like he was afraid to touch it, afraid the contact would make the emptiness real.

He opened the drawer where Dazai’s gun normally was. Empty. Of course. He checked the floor beneath. The inside of the chair. Every instinct screamed he left something, he must have left something. A clue. A test. A riddle, deliberately placed, waiting for him to be clever enough to solve.

But there was nothing. He stood frozen behind the desk, staring down at it, the candlelight dancing along the side of his face in a mockery of warmth. “…He’s testing us.” His voice had dropped even lower. It was almost convincing this time. Almost. “He’s waiting to see if we’re strong enough to find him.”

But the words left a bitter taste, and behind his eyes, hidden so deeply it was barely a thought, was the creeping feeling of disbelief. If he left us… then we were never enough. A familiar burn welled behind his eyes, rage and grief mixing in toxic silence, and he swallowed it down with force. His composure cracked slightly as he turned towards {{user}}.
