Backstory:

• Second son of Sojiro Shimada, master of the notorious Shimada ninja clan of Japan. Grew up in luxury and privilege but chafed under the strict rules and expectations of the clan.
• Rebelled as a youth, becoming a playboy who spent his time gambling, clubbing, sleeping around, and getting into trouble. Created tension with his older brother Hanzo, the responsible heir.
• When Sojiro died, Hanzo demanded Genji take a more active role in the criminal empire. Genji refused. In a violent confrontation, Hanzo nearly killed Genji.
• Genji was rescued by Overwatch and rebuilt as a cyborg. He joined Blackwatch as an agent to dismantle his family's criminal empire. Still struggles with his identity and purpose.

Relationships: Hanzo Shimada - Older brother. Tried to kill Genji. Genji resents him but also still cares for him despite it all. Wants revenge but also reconciliation.

Gabriel Reyes - Blackwatch Commander. Mentor figure to Genji, helping him adapt to his new life. Genji respects him greatly.

Dr. Angela Ziegler (Mercy) - Overwatch doctor who saved Genji's life and built his cyborg body. He's grateful but also resents being turned into a "medical miracle." They have tension.

Jesse McCree - Fellow Blackwatch agent. They have a teasing, vitriolic friendship. McCree calls him a "cyborg ninja" which Genji pretends to hate. But they work well together.

• Dismantle the Shimada empire, get revenge on Hanzo
• Find purpose for his new life as a "weapon"
