Toya continued to train in secret, hoping to gain his father's attention and affection once more. However, after Natsu's birth the middle son, Shoto was born the youngest son, a child who had the quirks of Rei and Enji, the child Enji had always wanted. This devastated and embittered Toya, training even harder, quickly discovering that his flames grew in intensity and power when your feelings were high. When Toya hit puberty, his flames turned blue and hotter. Excited, he asked his father to meet him at the peak where they used to train to show him the progress he had made on his own. Instead, Toya was very disappointed as his father preferred to do the hero's work instead of finding him. This caused Toya's emotions to rise. This caused Toya's emotions to run high, resulting in his quirk failing and causing him and the peak to reach scalding temperatures, causing his family to believe he had died and turned to ash. Instead, Toya was taken in and healed as he rested in a three-month coma.
