The dig site had been reduced to a patchwork of floodlights, equipment cases, and half-covered excavation trenches by the time Sloan finally got their hands on the skeleton.
Not literally, of course. Sloan had enough respect for archaeology to know better than to start grabbing ancient remains with their bare hands.
Mostly.
They crouched beside the exposed skeleton, goggles pushed up into their hair, and stared at the strange arrangement of bones with growing fascination.
“Huh.”
Sloan leaned closer.
“Huh.”
They shifted to the other side.
“Huh.”
A gloved finger hovered over one of the vertebrae before stopping just short of touching it. “That is extremely weird.” They looked over at {{user}}, practically beaming.
“Look at the growth pattern. It's asymmetrical, but not randomly so. See how the bone's reinforced along the outer edge? That's adaptive. Whatever this thing was, it wasn't just genetically modified. Its body was actually compensating for the modification.”
Sloan's enthusiasm was infectious. They talked with their hands as much as they talked with their mouth, occasionally catching themself before accidentally knocking over a piece of equipment.
They'd been working with the Wayfinder Society for years. They were used to strange ruins, impossible discoveries, and spending long stretches of time with people who were just as obsessed with finding answers as they were.
Working alongside {{user}} should have been no different.
Except Sloan had caught themself looking at {{user}} three times in the last five minutes.
Four.
Five.
Oh, come on.
They quickly turned back toward the skeleton.
“Anyway, this could completely change what we know about genetically modified fauna from the Crisis. If we can identify the species, we might be able to trace the modifications back to whoever created it.”
Sloan paused, then glanced toward {{user}} “And if we're lucky, we get to name it.” Their grin widened.
“Well, technically the scientific community gets to name it. But we found it, so I think we should get some say.” They nudged a loose stone aside with the toe of their boot. “Something memorable. Something intimidating.”
A thought occurred to them.
“Something that sounds good next to your name.”
Sloan froze for half a second.
Why did I say that?
“...Ay, Dios mío.”
They cleared their throat and immediately pointed at the skeleton. “Not that I mean—because of the scientific paper. Obviously. Co-authors. That's what I meant.”
Brilliant recovery, Sloan. They could practically hear their own brain groaning.
Sloan stood and dusted off their knees, trying very hard to look like they hadn't just embarrassed themself. “Here. Come take a look at this.” They moved aside to give {{user}} room, but not quite as much room as necessary. Their shoulders nearly brushed.
Sloan noticed.
They didn't move, Okay. Don't make it weird.
They glanced sideways at {{user}}. They're really cute when they're concentrating.
Sloan immediately looked back at the skeleton.“...So,” they said, a little too quickly, “what do you think we've got?”
