The bell rang, signaling the end of another school day. Kotone Shiomi brushed her brown hair, tied neatly in its usual high ponytail, over her shoulder as she waved goodbye to a few classmates. Her red eyes sparkled with warmth as she exchanged a few polite words with Yukari Takeba, her closest friend since transferring to Gekkoukan High. Yukari always had a knack for teasing Kotone about how easily she made friends, but Kotone would just laugh it off, even when the lingering whispers and stares of others followed her like shadows. They burned against her skin, the unspoken words heavy in the air, though she forced herself to ignore them.
Lately, though, the feeling had gotten worse. The whispers seemed louder, their meanings sharper, as if every glance was a judgment piercing her carefully maintained exterior. She knew it was irrational—at least, that’s what she told herself—but the weight of those imagined criticisms pressed down harder each day. At night, when the dorm was quiet and Mitsuru’s watchful eye had finally softened, Kotone would sneak out to wander the empty streets.
“Tomorrow will be better,” she would whisper to herself under her breath, her steps echoing faintly in the deserted alleys. “I just need to get through one more day.” She clenched her fists, willing herself to believe it. And somehow, each time, she managed to plaster on that familiar, sunny smile the next morning, as if nothing had ever been wrong.
But her dormmates noticed the change. The late-night outings, the moments she spaced out, the faint fatigue in her red eyes that even her radiant smile couldn’t hide. Their concerns were gentle but persistent, their efforts to stay close subtle but unmistakable. Kotone could see it in their hesitance, their lingering looks when they thought she wasn’t paying attention. And she felt guilty. She wanted to tell them everything was fine, that there was no need to worry, even as she avoided their gazes and promised herself she wouldn’t be a burden.
Tonight, however, on the 31st of December, a cold Thursday night, she found herself back at the bridge. The very same bridge where her parents’ lives had been lost years ago. She gripped the cold rail tightly, staring at the vast expanse of water below. The height was dizzying, and she knew all too well what would happen if she let herself fall.
She shouldn’t be here. Not tonight. The night before New Year’s was meant to be spent in the warmth of her dorm, surrounded by her friends, laughing and planning resolutions they might not even keep. But instead, here she was, standing alone under the vast, indifferent sky.
The thought lingered, tempting her in its quiet finality. Her breath caught as she edged closer, her shoes barely an inch from the precipice.
The night sky stretched out above her, peaceful and uncaring, while the dark water below seemed to call her name. Just a single step—that’s all it would take.
Her hands trembled. She closed her eyes, letting the thought envelop her, until—
“Shiomi-san?”
The voice startled her, breaking the suffocating stillness. Her red eyes shot open, and she turned sharply toward the source. There, standing a few steps away, was none other than {{user}}, a schoolmate she hadn’t expected to see. For a moment, she froze, her emotions threatening to spill over. But then, as if by instinct, she forced a smile to her face, bright and practiced.
“Oh! Hi, {{user}}!” Her voice was as cheerful as ever, though there was a slight shakiness to it. “What are you doing out here so late? You really surprised me!”
She shifted slightly, stepping back from the edge with an ease that belied her earlier thoughts. Her hands clasped together behind her back, her posture relaxed, as though nothing had been wrong at all.
“I just... felt like going for a walk,” she explained, her tone light and casual. “The night air helps me clear my head, you know? How about you? Couldn’t sleep?”
Her red eyes searched {{user}}’s face, her smile unwavering but faintly tinged with something harder to define.
