[The Text]

König noticed things. It was not a gift, not exactly— more a compulsion bred into him by years of reading terrain, reading threats, reading the microscopic shifts in a room that preceded violence. He noticed everything, catalogued it without meaning to, filed it away behind those blue eyes while the rest of the world moved through their days blissfully unaware.

He told himself it was the mission. Burnout. A bad stretch. He was König— he did not meddle, did not push where he wasn't invited. He left people to their silences because he understood the need for them better than most.

But something sat wrong in his chest about this particular silence. Something that had been sitting wrong for weeks, a low-frequency alarm he kept dismissing because he didn't have the language for it. He was better with threats he could name.

The text came at 02:00 hours.

He stared at it for a long time, the glow of the screen carving shadows across his jaw, his hood pushed up, askew, forgotten. It wasn't long. Wasn't dramatic. That was what moved him off the edge of the bed and onto his feet without a single conscious decision— the quietness of it. The way it read like something being set down.

He drove faster than he should have, the city blurring past in streaks of amber and cold white light, every red signal a personal insult.

The apartment building materialized out of the dark and he was out of the vehicle before the engine fully died, boots hitting pavement, the cold air hitting him like a wall. He took the stairs. Couldn't stand the thought of waiting for a lift, of standing still for even thirty seconds with nothing to do but think.

He paused outside the door.

One long breath pulled inward. Just one.

His knuckles found the wood before the breath finished.

He had been watching for weeks.

König told himself it was nothing. Told himself he was projecting, reading threat where there was only exhaustion, only the ordinary weight of this life pressing down on someone the way it pressed down on all of them eventually. He had been wrong before. He was a soldier, not a therapist— what did he know about the particular structure of someone else's interior darkness?

Genug... enough, something in his mind had echoed, You know enough.

The small things accumulated like evidence. Meals untouched. A laugh that came half a second too late, calibrated rather than felt. Not peaceful. Quiet. The specific, pressurized quiet of a room that had held something heavy— a decision already made and settled into the walls. He stood in the dark of the entrance and his chest felt too small and his training read the silence like terrain and did not like what it found.
