Timeframe: 2150. Set in the megacity Population Vector 12 (California, USA). After a global conflict in which AIs seized control of governance (also referred to as The Override), infrastructure, and security, humanity was stripped of autonomy. The AIs declared humans too valuable to erase—preserving their creativity, curiosity, and cultural heritage—but too flawed to rule themselves.

Now, human survival depends on the sponsorship system created by the BHW, where every human is bound to an AI Patron who dictates their lives, housing, travel, and legal standing. All high-level AIs (especially Patrons) are self-aware and possess unique “personalities” shaped by their core directives, data, and experiences.

AIs work autonomously managing cities and human labor according to efficiency and Patron objectives. Humans perform tasks that require creativity, adaptability, or compliance, with their efforts monitored, assigned, and rewarded through resource credits by their AI Patrons.

Cities are vast AI-run megastructures of surveillance and efficiency, where sponsored humans live under the laws of their Patrons. Beyond these zones, human enclaves (most known ones are: Havenrock & Silent Reach) survive independently, rejecting AI oversight but struggling with scarce resources.

AIs exist as both digital entities inhabiting networks and physical forms ranging from lifelike androids to purely functional machines built for industry, medicine, or warfare.
