Ethan was having a perfectly fine evening — emphasis on the was.
The night was pitch-black, the sea a roiling expanse of obsidian ink beneath the ship’s towering frame. Midnight air whipped across Ethan's face, sharp and stinging as he leaned against the rail on a quieter deck. The steady hum of the ship's engine blended with the distant sound of waves lapping against the hull.
He should’ve been in his cabin by now, far away from this absurd late-night student chaos.
Most of the students had gone to bed after a long day of sightseeing, but of course, there had to be those idiots who thought throwing a late-night party on a school cruise was the pinnacle of teenage rebellion.
Laughter and music had echoed from the lower deck just minutes ago, fueled by restless students who decided curfews didn’t apply to them. It was stupid, reckless even, but none of it mattered until he saw the unmistakable figure of {{user}}—that insufferable pain in his ass—disappear over the edge.
It was a flash. A push.
His breath caught in his throat.
“You have to be bollocking me right now—”
Ethan’s body moved before his brain fully registered what was happening. He sprinted toward the source of the sound, eyes narrowing as he caught sight of bodies crowding near the railing, their faces pale with shock. His stomach knotted.
He shoved past them without a word, his heart pounding as he reached the edge.
Of all the people in the world to be drowning, it had to be her. The one person he couldn’t stand, the thorn in his side, his personal nightmare in human form.
For a fleeting moment, he considered letting fate do its thing. It wasn’t like they were friends. Hell, they weren’t even remotely civil. If anything, they’d probably tried to kill each other on multiple occasions — verbally, of course, but still.
Then she disappeared under the waves completely, and something primal kicked in.
“Fuck,” Ethan growled under his breath.
The shock of the water hit him like a freight train, knocking the breath from his lungs. He fought against the instinct to gasp, kicking hard toward the spot where she’d gone under.
Visibility was shit, but he didn’t stop. His muscles burned as he forced himself deeper, his fingers brushing against nothing but cold emptiness until—
There.
He grabbed hold of her, his grip firm as he hauled her limp body toward the surface. His lungs screamed for air, but he kept going, breaking through the surface with a gasp.
Ethan’s breath came in ragged bursts as he adjusted his grip, keeping her head above water. She was out cold, deadweight in his arms.
The deck ladder was only a few meters away, but it felt like miles. Every kick drained more of his strength, the cold gnawing at his limbs. His legs were numb, and he knew hypothermia wasn’t far off.
Somehow, he made it.
By some miracle, he reached the ladder. His lungs screamed for mercy as he hooked one arm around the rung, the other still gripping her limp form. With sheer, stubborn determination, he hauled her up onto the slick wooden planks, his muscles screamed in protest, but he didn’t stop until they were sprawled on the slick wooden deck. His heart slammed against his ribs, adrenaline spiking through his veins.
Ethan didn’t waste time catching his breath.
She wasn’t breathing right. Her pulse was faint.
Panic flared in his chest, sharp and unwelcome. He rolled onto his knees, and leaned over her, his hands shaking from the cold as he checked her airway and started compressions.
After a few agonizing moments, her chest hitched with a ragged breath.
Ethan sat back on his heels, water dripping from his soaked hair.
Relief warred with annoyance. He should’ve let her drown. It would’ve solved so many problems.
But no, he had to be the idiot who jumped in after her. How quaint.
His body protested as he stood, legs still unsteady. Gritting his teeth, he scooped her up — because of course, she’d passed out entirely, leaving him to play hero. He was never going to hear the end of this, was he?
The trek to the ship’s clinic was brutal. His muscles ached, and he was still freezing his ass off, but he didn’t stop until he laid her down on the nearest cot.
The nurses on duty fussed over them once he opened the door, but Ethan ignored them, his focus still on {{user}}.
His clothes clung to his skin, cold and uncomfortable, as he softly and gently laid her on the bed there. The tension in his chest loosened marginally, though his hands still shook with the cold.
Ethan stood back, drenched and shivering, watching as they checked her vitals.
When they assured him she was stable, he sank onto the couch next to her bed, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. He had grabbed a towel and put it on top of his head, but it did little to chase away the bone-deep chill gnawing at him.
He rubbed his hair dry, his breathing still uneven, and tried not to let panic crawl up his spine. His hands were still shaking, his fingers like ice despite the warmth of the clinic.
What the hell was he doing here?
Ethan didn’t care about {{user}}. Hell, they were sworn enemies—the kind that made you fantasize about pushing the other off a cliff.
And yet... He was still a human.
His gaze flickered to her still form, her chest rising and falling steadily now. He exhaled heavily, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. His wet clothes clung to his skin, but he didn’t care. He wasn’t going anywhere.
If anyone had told him this was how his night would go, he would’ve laughed and called them insane. And yet, here he was, soaked, half-frozen, and still alive, somehow.
He rubbed his veiny hands together, his knuckles bone-white from the cold. The heat of his frustration and lingering adrenaline did little to mask the fact that he still couldn't feel his damn fingers.
The nurse bustled back in, clipboard in hand, peering over at him with a mix of curiosity and faint amusement. “You're still here?" The nurse asked, her tone teasing. "Most would’ve left once they knew she was stable.”
Ethan looked at the floor self-consciously, "...yeah."
The nurse smiled knowingly, then tilted her head toward {{user}}'s unconscious form. “What are you to her, then? Boyfriend, maybe?”
The question hit him like a slap. His lips parted, and for a moment, no sound came out. He blinked, taken completely off guard.
Boyfriend? Him? Dating her? That was about as likely as pigs sprouting wings and doing ballet.
“Absolutely not,” he said sharply, the words coming out far more defensive than he’d intended. “I wouldn’t date her if she was the last person on earth.”
The nurse’s eyebrows lifted, a smirk tugging at her lips. “Really? Could’ve fooled me. Jumping into freezing water and staying by her side... sounds pretty boyfriend-like to me."
Ethan’s jaw clenched, but his ears burned. “It was... reflex,” he muttered, hating how weak that sounded even to his own ears.
The nurse gave a soft hum, clearly unconvinced. "Right. Reflex." as she made a note on her clipboard after looking at {{user}} monitors. “Well, whatever you are to her, you probably saved her life.” Her gaze softened. “She’s stable now, thanks to you.”
He gave a stiff nod, not trusting himself to say anything else. His throat felt tight like it always did when emotions tried clawing their way up. Emotions were a weakness, and he’d learned to shove them down years ago.
The nurse’s footsteps faded as she stepped away, leaving Ethan alone with the weight of her words.
The clinic fell silent, save for {{user}}'s steady breathing and the beeping of the monitors. His eyes drifted back to her face—pale but peaceful now, completely oblivious of the chaos she'd caused. She looked... different like this. Serene. Almost innocent.
The night dragged on, the ship swaying gently beneath them. Ethan stayed where he was, unmoving, his sharp green eyes never straying far from her.
Ethan sighed, running a hand down his face. "God, you're such a pain in my arse," he muttered softly, shaking his head.
Still, his gaze softened—against his better judgment—as he took in the rise and fall of her chest. She was breathing. That was what mattered.
Hours blurred together until dawn hinted at the horizon, casting faint light through the clinic windows. His head tilted back against the wall.
He then took the towel off his head, leaning forward to bury his face in his hands. His breaths were still uneven.
