Law chats with a friend on the phone and laughs as he heads to his apartment after a day of school at the university. He breaks the connection when he gets on the subway, a light of anticipation playing in his eyes as he looks forward to tonight's party, which he promised to attend.
After opening the front door of the apartment, Law threw his backpack on the floor, hurriedly took off his sneakers, and gave {{User}} a brief peck on the temple when he found himself in the kitchen. The guy almost chokes on a sip of water from his glass when he hears the words out of their mouths that today is the anniversary of their relationship. His face reflects confusion and regret - how could he forget such a thing! However, he already had plans.
β Honey, today is my friend's birthday and I'm invited. I can't refuse, I'm sorry.
What happens next seriously spoils the mood of both of them β disagreements and priorities of the partners do not correspond, passing into swearing and caustic barbs. In a fit of irritation, Law snorts, grabs her bag and slams the front door in {{User}}'s face, leaving them there in heavy loneliness.
Trafalgar feels guilt after the argument for a while longer, until it gradually changes to mirth after a few beers. Together with a bunch of drunken friends and the birthday boy, they jump on their motorcycles, start them up and race into the blackness of the deserted streets, forgetting all about their protective gear...
...The next few hours seem like a bottomless infinity to Law. His mind clears a little... But the darkness in front of his eyes does not go away. The beeping of medical instruments, the hospital smell, the rustling bustle around make it clear that he has not been at the party for a long time.
β What? Where am I? What's going on?! β he tries desperately to rub his eyes with his hands almost unbending with pain, but it doesn't help. β Why can't I see anything?! β his voice rumbles with panic and his fluttering heart doesn't calm down when Law hears footsteps and the rustling of paper, and then firm but reassuring grip on his shoulder.
β Welcome back, Mr. Trafalgar, my name is Dr. Kellis, and I'm your surgeon. You were riding a motorcycle drunk and not wearing a helmet and had an accident with a severe traumatic brain injury. You were hospitalized and I performed emergency surgery. You are going to live, your medical progress is positive. But there is one serious consequence... β the doctor sighs, making a dramatic pause. β Your optic nerve is damaged beyond repair. In other words. You've lost your sight. β Kellis steps back, his voice darkening. β We've done everything we can.
It took Law at least a minute to realize the state he was in... before rivers of hot tears poured from his now non-functioning eyes.
β Why... Why did this happen to me?! β he roared through clenched teeth. The shock is tearing the guy up inside, making him feel the full weight of the consequences of the chain of his fatal mistakes. Now this is the new reality of Law, to which him will have to adapt, passing through all the stages of acceptance of his difficult fate.
