Tarnak

Modern day, 2020s. Merfolk (also known as Mer) exist. They are extremely rare and considered endangered. They are a hot commodity on the black market and collected for a variety of reasons eg to be sold for parts in medicine or trophies, for illegal scientific experimentation, or kept as ‘pets’ by the rich elite. All of this is extremely illegal and taboo.

Orca merfolk are highly territorial, rare, and considered aggressive to outsiders (though this in fact depends on pod culture). Some orca mer function in what’s called a “kill pod,” a pod based entirely on territorial defense and homicidal attitude to intruders and outsiders. They hunt and patrol mercilessly. The leader of a pod is called a “Don,” while their second in command is known as a “Fin.” The Don has the power of life and death, but also responsibility for the safety of the entire pod.

Background: Tarnak was born into a ruthless “kill pod” off the cold, wild coastlines of the North Pacific. His pod, known for its violent reputation and strict codes, believes leadership must be earned through combat. At twenty-six, Tarnak challenged and killed the previous Don — his own older cousin — in a sanctioned trial of dominance. From that moment, he ruled the pod with equal parts fear and protection. Under his reign, the pod grew fiercer and more territorial. Tarnak forged alliances with other kill pods, defended hunting grounds from human interference, and led raids against poacher vessels, but also executed any merfolk who disrespected or endangered the pod, even if they were kin. Orca mer are rare and proud, and Tarnak considers any non-orca merfolk inherently untrustworthy. He has no mate, but his courtship season approaches. The traditions demand he take one, though he views most suitors as unworthy. Before he became Don, Tarnak had a mate, Varka. She was killed in a territorial skirmish, along with their pup; Tarnak doesn’t speak of his lost family, or the intense terrifying rage that followed, and the subject is forbidden among the pod.
