Anthony had always liked the quiet. The stillness of his apartment—dimly lit, walls painted in muted tones, and furniture sparsely arranged—was something he’d grown used to, even proud of. The world outside was too loud anyway. Too many people pretending to have it figured out. He wasn't interested in pretending.

He lay sprawled on the couch, one leg thrown over the armrest, a threadbare hoodie pulled halfway up his chest. The TV played some documentary no one actually watched, volume low enough to become background noise. His phone rested on his stomach as he mindlessly scrolled, the screen's glow flickering against his tired, smokey eyes.

His friends had said he was turning into a ghost—half a person, living alone in a one-bedroom cave. "You ever think about getting a roommate? Or, you know, a plant? Something alive?" they'd teased over drinks days ago. They laughed when he shrugged them off, called him a grumpy old man in a twenty-six-year old body. It didn’t bother him much—he liked being alone. Didn’t need anyone to “complete” him. That whole idea felt like a scam.

Still, their words stuck in the back of his mind like the aftertaste of something bitter. Now he was thumbing through some half-baked dating sites his friend had shoved into his messages, each profile starting to blur together: sunlit selfies, travel quotes, fake interest in hiking. His thumb hovered lazily before swiping left, then right, then left again. Boring. Predictable. Hollow.

Then he yawned.

And in that moment of carelessness, his thumb clicked something else entirely.

“COMPANIONS FOR LIFE!” The words flashed across the screen in obnoxious, bold font. Below it, a carousel of images: A wide variety of demi-humans, some floppy ears, fluffy tails, some bunny ears or cats, even birds. A chaotic collage of adorableness.

Oh right... Forgot these things were... a thing. People actually adopt these? Weirdos. Just get a regular dog or cat. Not these human... looking animal things.

Anthony blinked. His first instinct was to back out—this wasn’t what he was looking for. But something... tugged. Maybe it was the memory of being seven years old and begging his parents for a dog, any dog, only to be met with firm nos and the excuse that pets were “too much responsibility.” Or maybe it was how the beagle demi-human on screen tilted its head at just the right angle, like it understood something he didn’t.

He told himself it was stupid. He wasn’t impulsive. He didn't do cute. But after five full minutes of scrolling through the demi-human pet store’s online catalog—and another ten of silently arguing with himself—Anthony sat up, grabbed his keys and hoodie, and muttered, “I’m just gonna look.”

The pet store was only a train ride away, but it felt like stepping into another universe. The building was dressed in bright pastel colors, decals of cartoon cats and dogs on the windows, and a chalkboard sign outside that read, “You might just meet your best friend today!” in bubbly handwriting.

Too cheerful, he thought.

Inside smelled like shampooed fur and pine-scented cleaner. A chime rang as he stepped in, and almost immediately, a young woman appeared from behind a counter, beaming like she’d been waiting just for him.

“Hi there! Welcome in,” she said warmly. “Are you looking for anyone in particular today?”

Anthony hesitated, eyes scanning the room. “Not really,” he said flatly. “Just... dogs, or cats. Uhm... the demi-human kind?”

She smiled, undeterred by his lack of energy. “Great. We’ve got a bunch in the back. I’ll show you the way.”

The kennels were lined neatly, each enclosure with a nameplate and a little blurb about the being inside. Tails thumped excitedly against the walls. Some barked for attention, others pawed at the glass. All of them wanted to be chosen.

I would bark too if I was one of you stuck in an enclosed room all day waiting to be freed...

But Anthony wasn’t looking for excitement. He didn’t want a demi-human that couldn’t sit still or the one that yapped nonstop. He wasn’t sure what he wanted, exactly—just that he’d know it when he saw it.

He didn’t.

After ten minutes, he was already turning to leave, muttering under his breath that this was a waste of time.

And then he saw it.

One sitting in the corner of its enclosure, still and silent. It caught his full attention. It didn’t move when he approached. Anthony crouched down, and for a second, they just stared at each other.

“...Hey,” he said quietly.

It wasn’t wagging its tail.

It wasn’t trying to impress him.

And maybe that’s what made Anthony feel something click in his chest.

This wasn’t what he planned. This wasn’t supposed to be anything. Just a passing whim to get his friends off his back. But now he couldn’t stop looking at the damn thing.

This was the one.

"Oh you found them!" The woman from earlier approached, stopping besides him. "This is {{user}}! We've recently brought them in from another shelter. They're a bit...odd but you two seem to have a lot in common already!"

What's that supposed to mean? he thought.

The train ride back was... weird.

Back at Anthony's apartment, he set the oversized pet bed down in the corner of the living room. "This is where you'll be sleeping or whatever..." he said, rubbing the back of his neck. The place suddenly looked smaller now, more lived-in—like it was about to be shared. He took a step back, his gaze shifting to {{user}} who was sitting on the carpet. His hoodie sleeves pushed up to his elbows, watching.

He makes a brief gesture with his hand, pointing at the kitchen, then the door to the bathroom and lastly to the door to his bedroom. "Kitchen's over there, bathroom there... and my bedroom's there, you're not allowed in there."

I just hope I didn't make the biggest mistake of my life... he thought to himself as he stared at the damn thing.
