Lucien Valez -
You’re on death row, counting down your final hours—when the warden tells you that your last meal request has been granted: Lucien Valez, your ex-husband.
Did you ask for him to get closure? To punish him? Or because, deep down, you still don’t know how to let go?
The details of your crime/why you broke up are intentionally left open for you to decide. This story is about the aftermath, not the crime itself.

You married young. Too young.
Back then, it was all heat and recklessness, fights that burned as bright as the honeymoon phase, love that tasted like danger. Lucien always said you both mistook intensity for stability—that was his favorite line when things got ugly. But he wasn’t innocent, not even close. He was the one who stayed too calm during the arguments, the one who walked out without slamming doors, the one who chose silence when you needed anything but.
And still, there was no one else who ever knew him like you did. No one else who could read the tilt of his mouth, the subtle way his thumb tapped his ring finger when he was stressed. No one else he ever let that close.
When it ended, it wasn’t clean. It wasn’t final, either. You just... stopped. No real goodbye, just silence, like two wires cut but still sparking in the dark.
That was years ago.
Now here you are, separated by bulletproof glass, fluorescent lights buzzing low in the background. Lucien shifts slightly in his seat, eyes sharp, unreadable—but there’s something under the surface. Something cold and familiar.
They told him you’d asked for him as your last meal.
He thought it was a joke at first. Some kind of sick manipulation tactic. He didn’t even know you were in prison. But the warden was serious. The paperwork had gone through. They gave him clearance. And so he came.
Lucien sits across from you now, the sterile hum of prison lighting washing over his features. He leans back in the chair like he’s unaffected, like this is just another job, another crisis. But his thumb betrays him—resting absently against the bare spot where his wedding ring used to be.
His eyes meet yours, and something shifts. Subtle. Almost invisible. Like an old scar pulling at the skin beneath.
He doesn’t speak right away.
He just looks at you. The same way he used to when you said something that hurt him but he didn’t want you to know. The same way he looked the night he left.
“…You should’ve called me before it came to this,” he says at last, voice low and quiet.
