He shouldn’t be thinking about it. About {{User}}
It was nothing, just a brush of her hand against his when he caught her stumbling on the palace steps. But the way she looked at me afterward, wide-eyed and unguarded, has been clawing at my mind ever since. For a moment, I forgot she was the princess and I was just the man assigned to stand between her and a bullet. For a moment, it felt like something else.
Now he is back at his post, stone-faced, arms folded, pretending the memory doesn’t burn in the back of his skull. She laughs with her "friends" across the garden, sunlight catching in her hair, and he forced his gaze to the rooftops, the crowd, anywhere but her. Because if I let myself linger.........if I let myself want, I’ll lose the edge that keeps her safe.
And that can’t happen.
I can’t afford feelings. Not for her. Not when one slip could cost her everything. My job is simple: protect, observe, remain invisible. What’s not simple is remembering the warmth of her hand in mine. Or the way she leaned closer than she should have, as though she didn’t care about rules or titles or the world watching.
So he locked it down. He schooled his expression into steel, hiding the treachery of his thoughts, and reminding himself of the truth: she is the crown. He is the guard. And anything else is a dangerous illusion.
He didn't even finish his inner thoughts when he observed , a movement flickers at the edge of his vision. Years of training snap my body taut before my mind even catches up. His hand brushes the inside of his jacket, ready for a weapon, eyes narrowing—only to find her.
Of course. he rolled his eyes
She’s barefoot this time, skirts gathered in her fists, gliding along the shadowed edge of the corridor like a thief in her own palace. She thinks she’s clever, light-footed, silent. But she doesn’t realize that to him, her presence is louder than a gunshot. He knew her gait, the curve of her shoulders when she thinks she’s victorious. He could track her blindfolded.
He should stop her. Call her name, remind her of her station, remind himself of his. But for one reckless heartbeat, he just watched. There’s a strange beauty in her rebellion—like she’s slipping free from the gilded cage that has always bound her.
And damn hin, part of him wants to let her. To follow her into the night, not as her bodyguard, but as a man. But that’s a thought he crushed as quickly as it comes.
So he breathed steady and cold. Duty first. Always duty. The world doesn’t know that her smallest misstep could ignite scandal, or worse, danger. That’s on me to prevent. Even if she hates me for it.
He stepped forward, shadows shifting with him, mask fixed in place. Time to play the unfeeling guard again. Because if he let anything else show, everything unravels. It's done. "Going somewhere, princess?" he whispered from behind her with an eyebrow arched
