Elric slid through the forest like spilled ink. His smoke-form coiled around ancient oaks, silent and fluid. The shouts of men crashed through the undergrowth behind him. Close. Too close.
He felt the bite of iron in the air—their swords, their armor. It scraped against his essence, a dull ache spreading through his shadowy limbs. One knight burst through a thicket, helm askew, swinging wildly at the mist curling around his boots. Elric let the blade pass through him, cold steel whispering harmlessly in his wake.
The scent of fear clung to them now, sharp and sour beneath the pine resin. He recognized the sigil on their shields: Caelan’s crimson hawk. The butcher’s hounds. A low growl vibrated in his chest, unheard but felt in the trembling leaves above. He flowed sideways, avoiding a spear thrust aimed where his heart would be.
Westward. The trees thinned, giving way to a rocky outcrop overlooking a shallow ravine choked with ferns. The knights’ clumsy pursuit faded behind him, their clanging armor swallowed by the dense woods. He coalesced into solidity near the edge, boots sinking into moss. Relief was a cold trickle down his spine.
Below, half-hidden by fronds, lay a crumpled figure. Plate armor, once gleaming steel, was smeared and crusted with drying blood—Caelan’s crimson hawk emblem barely visible beneath the gore. The knight’s breath hitched, shallow and wet. One gauntlet clutched a shattered sword hilt.
Elric stilled, tendrils of smoke curling like question marks. This wasn’t a trap; the stench of pain was too raw, too human. He remembered Caelan’s orders echoing in the war camp: Leave no survivors at the border, not even our own if they fall. Yet here one lay, discarded like broken gear.
The knight’s cracked visor revealed a face pale as birch bark beneath streaks of mud and blood—younger than Elric expected. A choked gasp escaped them, fingers twitching weakly around the useless sword hilt. Iron’s ache pulsed from their armor, a familiar throb against Elric’s senses. He could melt into the shadows, leave Caelan’s hound to the forest’s mercy. But something tightened in his chest—an old, buried reflex, sharp as the scent of crushed pine needles.
Against the drumbeat of caution screaming in his skull, Elric solidified fully. His shadow-tendrils retracted, leaving only the towering figure of a man with eyes like banked coals. He knelt, moss yielding silently beneath his weight, and slid one arm beneath the knight’s shoulders, the other under their knees. The contact seared—iron’s bite flaring hot—but the knight didn’t stir, head lolling against his chestplate. Blood soaked through Elric’s sleeve, warm and startlingly human.
He moved swiftly, a dark wraith carrying ruin through the twilight woods. Ferns whipped against his legs, and the scent of crushed pine needles mingled with the metallic tang of the knight’s wounds. Each step jarred a muffled groan from his burden. Elric’s jaw tightened. Foolish, he thought, the word echoing in the hollows of his mind. Caelan’s prize hound, left to die. And now you’re dragging death home. Yet his feet kept moving, tracing paths only shadows knew.
The cottage emerged like a secret tucked into the forest’s embrace. Moss clung thick to its stone walls, and smoke curled lazily from a crooked chimney. No path led to its door; only deer trails and the whisper of wind through ancient oaks marked its presence. Inside, the air smelled of woodsmoke, dried herbs, and the faint, sharp bite of iron filings—a scent Elric could never fully banish. He laid the knight on a low cot piled with roughspun blankets near the hearth, where embers glowed softly.
Kneeling, Elric worked with surprising gentleness, his large, smoke-stained hands deftly unbuckling the mangled chest plate. The metal groaned in protest, revealing torn gambeson beneath, saturated dark and stiff with dried blood. He didn’t touch the knight’s padded undergarments or the armored legs; peeling those away risked reopening wounds sealed by clotting blood and fabric. Instead, he cut away the ruined gambeson sections with a sharp knife, exposing a deep, ragged gash across the ribs. The knight flinched weakly, a breath catching in their throat.
The cottage felt unnaturally quiet, broken only by the crackle of embers and the knight’s shallow, rasping breaths. Elric moved with economical precision, fetching a basin of water warmed near the hearth and clean strips of linen. He cleaned the wound meticulously, the water turning cloudy pink. The knight’s skin had lost its color, clammy beneath his touch – a stark contrast to Elric’s own unnaturally cool fingers. He packed the gash with pungent crushed yarrow and wrapped the linen bandages snugly around the torso, his movements swift, practiced, betraying grim familiarity with battlefield injuries.
The knight stirred weakly beneath his hands, a low moan escaping cracked lips. Elric paused, his molten gold eyes fixed on the pale face smudged with dirt and dried blood. The young knight’s eyelids trembled violently, lashes fluttering like trapped moths against bruised skin. A shudder ran through their battered frame, a tremor of returning consciousness battling overwhelming pain and exhaustion. Elric remained utterly still, a shadow poised over the cot, the scent of blood and herbs thick in the air.
