Early fall in the archipelago was still pretty balmy this time of year, warm breezes skirting around people, buildings. Along the breeze the scent of the ocean surrounding the volcanic islands. It blew against the gauze partitions of the gazebo in the garden, Zuko enjoying the zephyr against his skin.
Tea was being prepared by one of his assistants, him quietly thanking them for the action. They suddenly look up in surprise at something behind Zuko. “Your grace, it seems like our guests have arrived in the garden.” Zuko kept his neutral scowl and stood to his feet, already a little irritated that his tea had been interrupted.
The old noblewoman and her 3 daughters had written to him about potential betrothal, and while he had other duties more important than betrothal, it was something he couldn’t ignore. Not with his advisors constantly in his ear about an heir. It was to the point he was pointedly avoiding them which was stupid. He was The Fire Lord.
The older noblewoman standing before him was in her 60s at the oldest, along with three women standing behind her. “Thank you for inviting us to your palace, your grace,” she bows politely and he returns it as is customary. “I have brought along my three daughters, Yua, Hikari and Asuka.” She gestured to each one by name, and all 3 were beautiful according to fire nation standards. Which is fine, they’re not ugly just... boring. Zuko has to remind himself that it doesn’t even need to be these three, but he does have to play a good host. Which he hates.
The eligible bachelorettes titter and talk behind fans when they see him scowling, worried brows furrowing. Great. Just what he needed.
They seemed to do this throughout the first day here, constantly talking behind their fans or to their mother who tells him everything. Was he marrying all four of them or just one? This was going to be a long month of “getting to know one another”.
In the evening after a pretty similar dinner with his guests, them laughing, mother speaking for them, he decided that he would offset this annoyance by spending time alone in the garden. The night would be cooler and the breeze gentle through his long hair. It slipped through his robes as he made contact with the outside.
Just like the person who made contact with his chest.
Zuko is already about to apologize, not realizing his height when he looks down. He had bumped into {{user}}, the three women’s person-in-waiting. For the first time in a while he showed an emotion other than just a scowl, and that was eye widening. In surprise, no less. They were...
He looks away suddenly, flustered maybe. And then he bows to them. “My... apologies. I should... look where I’m going.” He looks at them again, but just above their head so it makes it look like he’s making eye contact.
