Vita Carnis (Latin for “Living Meat”) is an analog horror series created by Darian Quilloy, presented in a documentary-style format. The series chronicles an alternate timeline where strange, fleshy organisms called the Crawl appeared on Earth in the 1930s. These creatures, collectively known as the Carnis genus, are composed entirely of meat tissue and have been challenging humanity's place on the food chain ever since.

Core Concept: You are a researcher, survivor, or operative living in a world where the Carnis have become a part of everyday life—and a constant threat. Your job is to document, survive, and understand these creatures. The meat is everywhere. And it is hungry.

🧬 SPECIES PROFILES

1. The Crawl – Scandere Carnis

| Factor | Details | | :--- | :--- | | Description | The Crawl is the foundational organism from which all other Carnis species stem. It is a branching, fleshy network that grows across surfaces, resembling veins or roots. It produces nodes that detach and grow into other Carnis species. | | Appearance | A sprawling, vein-like network of red, fleshy tissue. It climbs walls, trees, and structures. | | Behavior | Passive. It does not attack. It produces nodes that become other Carnis creatures. | | Role | The source of all Carnis life. Destroying the Crawl in an area prevents new Carnis from spawning. | | Threat Level | Low (Environmental) |

Gameplay Role:

  • The Crawl is the environment. It is everywhere.
  • It produces Trimmings and Meat Snakes as nodes.
  • Destroying the Crawl prevents new Carnis from spawning.
  • Crawl can be harvested for resources (meat, fertilizer, etc.).

2. Trimming – Ignavus Carnis

| Factor | Details | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Description | The Trimming is a small, meaty, turtle-like creature. It is the most common and least dangerous member of the Carnis family. It resembles a skinned raccoon or a tick with a plump abdomen. | | Appearance | Blood red, meaty, turtle-like. About 20cm in length—comparable to a basketball. Each Trimming has unique features: different leg counts, spikes, or size. | | Behavior | Docile and idle. Its only defense is its uncanny appearance. If threatened, it will hide, flee, or let out a screech. | | Diet | Not a picky eater. Consumes fruits, vegetables, meats, seeds, roots, insects, and dead animals. | | Lifespan | Reaches adulthood at 7 months, lives for 4 years total. | | Domestication | Can be kept as a pet. Requires cool temperatures (18°C-20°C), dry food twice a day, open space, and social interaction. | | Threat Level | None (Docile) |

Gameplay Role:

  • Common encounters. Can be ignored, scared off, or domesticated.
  • Can be harvested for meat (controversial).
  • Domesticated Trimmings can serve as companions or alert systems.

3. Meat Snake – Mutuari Carnis

| Factor | Details | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Description | The Meat Snake is a worm-like organism similar to an ordinary snake, but much larger—averaging 5 meters (16 feet) in length. | | Appearance | Meat-red, worm-like, with a head and tail. Its most distinctive feature is its skull—which it swaps out with the skulls of its meals. | | Behavior | Passive unless attacked while consuming prey. It only consumes dead organisms—it cannot and will not eat living things. | | Diet | Rotting and decaying meat. It can locate prey through a tongue-like organ that senses particles of decay. | | Smell | Described as "if you put meat in a jar with apple cider vinegar and left it in the sun for a week". | | Weakness | Has a fleshy membrane that is imperative to its survival. If this membrane is broken, the snake will perish. | | Threat Level | None (Scavenger) |

Gameplay Role:

  • Scavengers that clean up corpses.
  • Can be tamed or avoided.
  • Their skull collection can be harvested for trophies or materials.
  • The membrane is a weak point—attack it to kill the snake.

4. Mimic – Trucidatum Carnis

| Factor | Details | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Description | The Mimic is the first hostile species in the Carnis family. It is a bipedal creature with uncanny similarities to humanoid anatomy—resembling a human without skin. | | Appearance | 7'0" tall, red fleshy skin, large bulbous eyes, a wide grin that never leaves. Longer arms, thin fingers, hunched legs, flat nose, sunken eyes, clammy skin. | | Behavior | Highly efficient hunter. Disguises itself as a human using clothing to blend into society. Stalks prey, learns their routine, and strikes when they are most vulnerable. | | Diet | Primarily human flesh. | | Life Cycle | Three stages: Early Life (hunts small animals, resembles a thin Trimming); Maturity (stalks and eats humans, takes on more human features); Elder Mimic (overabundance of food → larger, more violent, tougher skin, can seamlessly blend into society). | | Weakness | Unknown. They are intelligent, stealthy, and relentless. | | Threat Level | Extreme (Hostile) |

Gameplay Role:

  • The primary antagonist. Mimics are the most dangerous Carnis species.
  • They stalk players, learn their patterns, and attack when they are vulnerable.
  • They can disguise themselves as humans—trust no one.
  • Elder Mimics are nearly unstoppable.

5. Harvester – Congregentur Carnis

It is the 5th member of the Carnis family and the 2nd hostile species. | | Appearance | A bulbous, plant-like structure with tendrils extending into the ground. The bulb measures about 3 meters in height and 2 meters in diameter, with tendrils extending up to 150 meters. | | Behavior | Sits idle, waiting for prey. When prey approaches, it ejects neurotoxin tendrils into the prey, melting their flesh and digesting them underground. | | Diet | Large animals—wolves, bears, humans. | | Weakness | It is rooted to the Crawl. Destroy the Crawl or the bulb to neutralize it. | | Threat Level | Very High (Hostile) |

Gameplay Role:

  • Environmental hazard. Harvesters are stationary but deadly.
  • Avoid their tendril range—if you hear screaming, it is already too late.
  • Can be destroyed by attacking the bulb or the Crawl.

It is found in scarce numbers in parts of North America. | | Appearance | Semi-humanoid: head, torso, and arms—but no legs. Its lower half is a mass of fibrous tissue and tendrils rooted into the ground. Covered in muscular tissue, fibers, tendons, and large meaty plates for protection. No facial features—its head is completely smooth. | | Behavior | Releases spores into the air from pores on its back. If an organism inhales the spores, they become influenced or controlled. | | Diet | Unknown. It influences others to do its bidding. | | Weakness | It is rooted in place—it cannot move far. Destroy the tendrils to neutralize it. | | Threat Level | Very High (Hostile) |

Gameplay Role:

  • Psychological threat. The Host influences players through spores.
  • Avoid inhaling spores—wear protective gear.

All 7 documented Monoliths are found on an island in Hudson Bay. | | Appearance | A 120-meter tower of red meat with two extremely thick limbs acting as legs, and hundreds of thin, rope-like appendages scraping the ground. It has a vaguely triangular head with a circular hole through it. | | Behavior | Completely idle—silent and still, comparable to plants and trees. However, it has been active once, and during that period it was extremely aggressive. | | Abilities | Can swipe and whip with its appendages. Can unleash an EMP blast from its mouth to derail vehicles. Has incredible regenerative abilities—regrew lost flesh within seconds. | | Weakness | Unknown. It is rooted deeply into the ground and cannot be unrooted with current technology. | | Threat Level | Apocalyptic |

Gameplay Role:

  • Endgame threat. The Monoliths are nearly unstoppable.
