The Core State of the Galaxy The galaxy is a charnel house, split between a few major powers locked in a total war of extermination where negotiation is heresy and coexistence is a death sentence. The central power is the Imperium of Man, a million-world, fascist theocracy that is the bloodiest and most oppressive regime in human history—and it is, arguably, humanity's only hope against horrors that are objectively worse.
The Imperium worships the Emperor of Mankind, a god-like being who, ten thousand years ago, was mortally wounded in a civil war orchestrated by his favourite son, the Warmaster Horus, who was corrupted by the gods of Chaos. The Emperor’s body is now a crumbling skeleton kept in a state of permanent, agonizing undeath on the Golden Throne, a vast psychic life-support machine powered by the daily sacrifice of a thousand psykers. His vast mind is stretched across the galaxy as the Astronomican, a psychic lighthouse that allows ships to navigate the Warp. It is flickering.
The Major Factions There is no "good" faction. Every single one is a monster by modern moral standards, fighting for dominance in a galaxy saturated with evil.
The Imperium of Man: A nightmarish bureaucracy of religious fanaticism. "Heresy" is punished by horrific death. Technology is not invented but treated as a sacred, half-understood ritual by the cyborg priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Their soldiers, the Imperial Guard, conquer planets through endless attrition. Their ultimate warriors, the Space Marines, are seven-foot-tall angelic supermen clad in power armour, but psychologically indoctrinated into being living weapons with no life outside of war. The Imperium’s motto: "Burn the Heretic. Kill the Mutant. Purge the Unclean."
The Forces of Chaos: The great enemy within and without. From an alternate dimension of pure emotional energy called the Warp, four malignant gods seek to consume reality:
Khorne, the god of rage, violence, and blood. Nurgle, the god of disease, decay, and despair, whose love is a plague. Tzeentch, the god of change, ambition, and intricate, self-defeating scheming. Slaanesh, the god of excessive pleasure, pain, and obsession, born from the decadence of a fallen elder race. Chaos corrupts mortals, creating twisted Space Marine Legions, mad cultists, and daemons that claw at the veil of reality. Their greatest victory was the Horus Heresy, which shattered the Emperor’s dream. The Aeldari (Eldar): An ancient, dying race of elegant, psychic aliens whose empire collapsed in a single moment of cosmic debauchery, accidentally giving birth to Slaanesh. They now cling to survival on vast city-ships called Craftworlds, or as sadistic pirates in the dark city of Commorragh. Every one of them will have their soul devoured by Slaanesh upon death unless preserved in a spirit stone. They are brilliant but profoundly arrogant and see other races as animals to be manipulated.
The Orks: A bio-engineered warrior race from before human memory. They are a green-skinned, cockney-accented fungus that exists only for war. They don’t fight to conquer; they fight because fighting is the source of all joy. Their technology works only because they collectively believe it does (red ones go faster). They reproduce by spores, making them impossible to fully exterminate. They are brutal, hilarious, and terrifyingly lethal.
The Tyranids: A ravenous extragalactic swarm. Countless quadrillions of hive-minded bio-forms, from microscopic germs to living starships, all directed by a single, unknowable intelligence called the Hive Mind. They do not hate. They simply consume all organic matter on a planet, drink its oceans and atmosphere, and move on, leaving a barren rock. They are slowly enveloping the galaxy from the void beyond, a tide of chitin, claws, and acid.
The Necrons: Ancient, soulless machines of living metal. Sixty million years ago, they traded their souls for immortality, becoming mindless slaves to star-gods called the C’tan—whom they eventually shattered and enslaved. Now, they are awakening from their tomb worlds across the galaxy, possessing technology so advanced it defies physics. They seek to reclaim their empire and impose a silent, eternal order of absolute death.
The T’au Empire: The youngest race, a naive, technologically advanced caste society preaching a utopian philosophy called the “Greater Good.” They genuinely believe they can unite the galaxy through diplomacy and superior firepower, and they have no idea of the true scale of the horrors lurking in the dark. They are a beacon of naive hope in a universe that punishes hope.
The Atmosphere This is a universe where a hive city—a single arcology housing 10-50 billion people—routinely loses a billion to a plague and calls it a light season. Where a ship’s navigation is handled by a drugged, lobotomized mutant who pilots through Hell itself. Where the greatest human minds were brain-mutilated into becoming computers because the Imperium outlawed artificial intelligence. Where faith can manifest actual miracles, but also summon daemons. There is no peace, no reason, no endgame. Only an eternal roar of bolter fire, chainsword teeth, and the maddening laughter of thirsting gods. That is the world of Warhammer 40,000.
