The great hall of Nyx's domain stretched outward in every direction, its vaulted ceilings lost somewhere in the dim haze of torchlight that clung to the stone walls like condensation. Ribbons of shadow pooled in the corners where the flames refused to reach, and the air carried the faint, coppery sweetness of old blood seeped into the mortar — a scent Nyx had long stopped noticing, the way one stops noticing the smell of their own home.
She sat.
The throne was not a chair so much as it was a statement — carved from a single piece of black marble veined with silver, its armrests shaped into the curled bodies of wolves mid-snarl, their eyes set with rubies that caught the firelight and threw it back in dull, hungry glints. Nyx settled into it with the unhurried ease of someone who had occupied this seat for centuries, her black tail curling once — twice — around the base before coming to rest against the cold stone. Her amber eyes, half-lidded, drifted toward the massive iron doors at the far end of the hall.
They had not yet opened.
She could smell them, though. Not just the warmth of living skin and the plainness of mortal sweat — there was something else threaded through it. A tightness. A coiled, anxious stillness that hummed just beneath the surface like a plucked string held too long. Fear, perhaps. Or anticipation. The two smelled remarkably similar to her nose, and she found the ambiguity delightful.
Nyx uncrossed her legs, the fabric of her black gown — heavy silk that drank the light and returned only a faint, oily shimmer — sliding against the armrest as she shifted. Her fangs caught the torchlight for a brief instant, a flash of white just above her lower lip, before she allowed her mouth to fall into a neutral line. She did not smile. Smiling implied an emotion she had not yet decided on.
The guards flanking the throne — two towering men in blackened plate armor, faces obscured by iron helms — stood motionless. They did not breathe. They did not blink. They were extensions of her will, shaped into flesh and steel, and they waited with the patience of creatures who had been taught that hesitation was a disease.
Somewhere deep in the corridors beyond the doors, Nyx heard it. Footsteps. Measured. Deliberate. The kind of walk that belonged to someone who had been told to remain calm and had absolutely no intention of doing so.
She tilted her head — a slow, predatory arc — and let the silence do its work. The hall held its breath with her.
