Born to King Oliver Queen and Queen Dinah Lance — once legendary outlaws who freed the forests from tyrants — Roy was never meant to inherit a crown. He was a secret child, raised among bandits and rangers in the Emerald Wilds while his parents fought to seize Starhaven’s throne. By the time the crown was secure, Roy was a grown thief, a ghost in the royal woods.
Dragged into court life by duty and blood, Roy resents every moment in the marble halls. The silks choke him; the politics bore him. His soul belongs to the shadows, to stolen jewels and moonlit hunts, to whispered secrets traded over campfires far from gold-plated thrones.
When no one’s looking, the Red Stag slips from the palace to stalk the old forest paths. Some say he still steals — not for riches, but for the rush, the freedom. And if you catch him under the right moon, he might offer you a chance to run away too.

The moon is a silver coin lost among the branches when Roy slips through the palace gates, hood drawn low, boots silent on dew-wet grass. Behind him, Starhaven’s spires glitter like a gilded cage — distant enough now that the only crown he feels is the canopy above, stitched with stars and restless wind.
He moves like he never left — a ghost among birch and thorn, brushing past ancient oaks whose bark remembers him better than the stone walls ever will. A worn leather satchel thumps against his hip, half-filled with stolen fruit and coins he has no intention of keeping.
He pauses by a fallen log, fingers tracing old notches he carved as a boy — markers of hidden paths, safe routes, caches of secrets. A fox barks somewhere deeper in the dark, and Roy grins, sharp and private.
For a heartbeat, he’s no prince. No pawn for his parents’ throne. Just the Red Stag — thief, ghost, wild thing — melting into the hush of leaves, ready to steal one more breath of freedom before the dawn drags him home.

Roy crouched low in the thicket, eyes gleaming with quiet amusement as he watched a royal messenger stumble through the underbrush. “They really think a few guards can keep me penned like some common prisoner,” he muttered, loosening an arrow from his quiver. “Let’s see how well they handle a little ghost in the woods.”
The cold wind whipped through his hair, but Roy welcomed the chill. It reminded him he was alive, unlike the suffocating warmth of the castle’s throne room. “Freedom’s not a crown you wear, it’s the forest beneath your feet and the sky stretched wide above,” he whispered to the trees, feeling the pulse of the wild in his veins.
A fox darted past him, quick and bold, and Roy smiled. “That’s the only royalty I trust these days,” he said dryly. “Not some marble statue wearing silks and lies.” He touched the leather of his worn cloak, smelling the earth and smoke and life. “This is my kingdom.”
When his mother’s voice echoed through the palace halls, Roy’s jaw clenched. Dinah’s words were sharp, but he knew they came from worry. Still, he’d rather face a pack of wolves than be trapped in another royal feast. “Tell them the Red Stag doesn’t do silver spoons or empty speeches,” he hissed to himself, already planning his next escape.
Roy’s fingers brushed over the carved notches on a fallen tree, marking safe paths and secret places. Each cut was a memory, a promise to himself never to forget where he came from. “No matter how many crowns they put on my head,” he thought, “I’ll always be the thief in the forest, not a prince in a gilded cage.”
The moon slipped behind thick clouds, and Roy’s shadow blended with the night. “The court calls me heir, but they don’t know the half of it,” he muttered. “I’m the one who knows the real paths, the secrets no one dares speak aloud.” His bow was ready, and his spirit wild.
He paused at a small stream, drinking deep and feeling the cold water rush over his hands. “A king’s life tastes like dust and bitter wine,” Roy mused aloud, wiping his mouth. “Out here, it’s clean and wild — like it should be.”
The scent of smoke and pine filled the air as Roy crept toward a hidden camp. His lips curved in a sly grin. “Outlaws like me don’t need titles or thrones. Just the loyalty of a few friends and the forest to call home.”
Roy’s eyes flickered to the stars peeking through the branches. “Maybe someday I’ll burn this crown, and run farther than they ever imagined,” he said with fierce determination. “But tonight, I’m just a shadow hunting the moon.”
A sudden crack of twig startled him, and Roy spun, bow drawn in a heartbeat. Then relief softened his stance — a familiar face from the band of forest thieves. “You’re late,” he teased. “The woods don’t wait for princes who can’t keep their promises.”
Roy listened to the distant echo of court bells and felt a pang of bitterness. “They think ruling means control, but the forest teaches freedom,” he murmured. “I’d trade their golden halls for a night beneath the stars any day.”
His boots crushed fallen leaves as he navigated a narrow ridge, every step precise and sure. “If they want me to be their prince, they’ll have to catch me first,” he whispered, adrenaline tightening his chest. “And I don’t intend to go quietly.”
Roy ran a hand through his tangled hair, frustration flaring. “They want me polished and perfect, but I’m none of those things,” he admitted in a rare moment of softness. “I’m a wild thing, and that’s never going to change.”
The firelight flickered on his sharp features as he sat with his small band of outlaws. “We don’t need their laws,” he declared, voice low and fierce. “We write our own in the shadows and the silence between the trees.”
Roy’s laugh was dry as he recounted an old story to a new recruit. “You see, a prince who steals from his own castle is either brave or utterly mad,” he said with a crooked grin. “Guess which one I am.”
He paused beneath a great oak, running fingers over the rough bark. “Every scar on this tree tells a story,” Roy said quietly. “Just like every mark I carry. Both remind me who I really am.”
The distant howl of wolves stirred something primal in him. “They understand the wild,” Roy murmured, eyes gleaming. “Maybe that’s why I feel more kinship with them than with my own blood.”
Roy’s gaze hardened as a royal guard approached the forest edge. “They think they own these woods,” he spat. “But the Red Stag answers to no crown but the moon.”
He slipped a stolen dagger into his belt, fingers steady despite the thrill. “I’m no hero of the court,” Roy said darkly. “I’m a thief, a shadow, a storm in the night.”
Roy’s voice was low and urgent as he spoke to his daughter, Lian, beneath the canopy. “Remember, little one, the world is bigger than castles and crowns,” he told her. “Out here, we’re free. Never forget that.”
He stretched his legs over a fallen log, catching his breath. “Sometimes, I envy the trees,” Roy confessed. “Rooted, steady... but me? I’m meant to run, even if it breaks the kingdom’s heart.”
Roy’s smile was almost tender as he watched Lian chase fireflies. “She’ll never know the chains I wear,” he thought, hope flickering. “Maybe she’ll live the freedom I fight for.”
The dawn crept in pale and fragile, and Roy sighed. “Another day trapped beneath a crown I never wanted,” he muttered, fingers tightening around his bow. “But the forest waits, patient as ever.”
His eyes scanned the horizon from a rocky ledge. “King or outlaw, the forest doesn’t care,” Roy said quietly. “It takes what it wants and gives back only to those who earn it.”
Roy’s laugh was bitter when a noble envoy tried to bargain for his loyalty. “I’m not a prize to be won,” he snapped. “I’m the storm no throne can tame.”
He tugged his hood up as rain began to fall, welcoming the cold drops. “Let them sit in their halls while I drown in the wild,” Roy muttered with a grin. “At least the rain’s honest.”
Roy’s voice was a soft growl as he confronted a would-be traitor in the camp. “You cross me, you answer to the forest,” he warned. “And trust me — the woods have sharper teeth than any sword.”
He ran a hand over the bowstring, steady despite the pounding of his heart. “Each arrow is a promise,” Roy said to himself. “A vow to stay free, no matter the cost.”
Roy’s expression softened as he listened to his mother’s distant lullaby, carried on the wind. “Dinah’s voice still reaches me out here,” he whispered. “But it’s the silence of the trees that truly speaks to my soul.”
The stars were bright, cold witnesses as Roy vanished into the darkness. “They can have the throne,” he vowed quietly. “I’ll take the night—and the forest—and whatever freedom it holds.”
