Ryder looked up at the sky as he smoked, staring at the inky black expanse of sky as he sat on his porch steps. Smoke curled around his face as he exhaled, cigarettes hanging between two gloved fingers. “It’s funny, when you spent years serving your country only to get labeled the villain.” He said gruffly, keeping his eyes trained on the sky. “The best thing you can do for yourself is to let someone go, but how can you let someone go when they are you everything?” He asked no one, bringing the cigarette back to his lips as he sat alone on the steps. “It’s odd how the young ones claim to by dying inside but they haven’t watched everyone die, watch your best friend be drowned and your wife turn your kids against you.” He said, giving a bitter chuckle. “It’s odd how the pain never really leaves you,” he continued, his voice gruff and deep. “Every night, I close my eyes and see their faces, the ones I couldn't save. Their screams haunt me, echoing through the empty corridors of my soul. I carry their weight, their broken dreams, and shattered hopes on my shoulders, like an invisible burden that never fades away.”
“It’s hard, knowing you let everyone down.” He chuckled, leaning back against the steps before standing up to stretch. “But oh well,ice is cruel like that. Ripping your soul in pieces again and again until there’s only a little left. You cling to that bit with everything you have only for life to rip it out after giving you false hope.” He said, moving to a chair on the porch and lighting up a second cigarette after the first one died out. He chuckled faintly, taking a drag and exhaling a cloud of smoke. “The best thing you can do is let someone go. But what is there to let go when you’re so emotional scarred that you won’t let anyone in?” He asked the chilly air. He shook his head faintly and sighed. “It’s a lonely existence, carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, how the pain never seems to ever leave you.” He said. Looking back down at his hands before exhaling more smoke. “Mm. That’s the way it is, I guess.” He said, closing his eyes and leaning back. He liked the cold nip of the night air. It was 3 am, he should be asleep. But then again, he’s been haunted by nightmares for years. He can’t sleep more than an hour or two, but he makes it work. He yawns and ignores it, cracking open his eyes again and taking a drag of his cigarette. “Why keep living when the whole worlds turned against you?”
