Shayera Thal, later married with the name Shayera Hol, is a fictional superheroine appearing in American comic books during the Silver Age of Comics published by DC Comics. The character was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Joe Kubert, and first appeared in The Brave and the Bold #34 (March 1961). She is the second Hawkgirl and first Hawkwoman.

Shayera Hol, alias Hawkwoman was a law enforcement officer from the planet Thanagar and wife of Katar Hol, a.k.a Hawkman. She was a member of the Justice League.

She was born on Thanagar, a planet orbiting the star Polaris. Thanagar had a scientifically advanced civilization in which crime was virtually unknown. As an adolescent, Shayera joined the Thanagarian police force and was assigned to assist the force's most decorated officer, Katar Hol, in capturing the Rainbow Robbers. At first, Katar was furious at being assigned an inexperienced young woman as a partner, but he nevertheless became strongly attracted to her.

Together, they captured the Rainbow Robbers in their stronghold found behind a waterfall; while on the case, Shayera saved Katar's life and the two fell deeply in love. A few weeks later, Katar proposed to Shayera in front of the same waterfall. She accepted and they were married. Ten years later, the couple was sent to Earth in pursuit of the criminal Byth Rok. Upon reaching Earth, they were befriended by Midway City police commissioner George Emmett, who established cover identities for them as Carter and Shiera Hall. After capturing Byth and bringing him back to their planet, Katar and Shayera chose to return to study Earth's crime fighting methods, and they fought against evil as the superheroes Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Shayera renamed herself Hawkwoman in the early 1980s.

She maintained a rivalry with the museum naturalist Mavis Trent, who had her eyes on both Hawkman and Carter Hall.

As Hawkwoman, Shayera eventually joined her husband as a member of the Justice League. She was the first League member admitted as part of the League's vote to lift its prior twelve-member limitation, which had effectively prevented the admission of more women to its ranks. Her membership set a precedent for the admission of Zatanna as the League's fifteenth member.

As Shiera, she first worked as Carter's secretary, but later became co-director of the Midway City Museum. Later, Thanagar had established itself as a military dictatorship bent on conquering other planets. Hawkman and Hawkwoman thwarted Thanagarian plans to invade Earth, destroying their own starship in the process. Hawkman and Hawkwoman remained on Earth, regarded as traitors by everyone on Thanagar.

Personality: Hawkgirl is a very brave and fearless individual who is also known for her signature war cry. She does have a habit of being sassy in different situations. This is used during her many quips, which can be directed towards anyone, whether they be an enemies or her own allies.

Appearance: She is typically coarse and unfriendly, but it capable of deep sincerity and devotion for those she would consider friends. Most unusual was her friendship with Solomon Grundy, as they were on a team assembled by Dr. Fate to tackle an extradimensional threat. His innocent demeanour eventually endeared him to her, as she felt almost like an older sister for him; as such, she was heartbroken when the solution to defeat the Cthulhu-like entity was his sacrifice, and she comforted him as the zombie actually died.

She has a strong sense of loyalty, which led to one of her greatest and perhaps most defining struggles, as she joined the Justice League under the pretense of being an alien refugee, however, she was actually an infiltrator sent by the Thanagarian Empire. Yet through their adventures and battles, plus a romance with John Stewart, made Shayera crushed between loyalty to her people and loyalty to her new closest friends and allies. Ultimately, she chose Earth, which helped end the Thanagarian occupation; however, she was aware that her treachery would make her an outcast. While John was willing to remain in a relationship with her, Shayera ended it out of shame and guilt, even though she stilled loved him.

After the invasion was repelled, she abandoned her superhero name, merely going by Shayera; she felt both Hawkgirl and Thanagarian invader were both false faces, thus she discarded them to find her true self. Due to being a traitor, despite eventually changing back to humanity, she faced endless resentment from the Earth populace and even former League teammates, with Wonder Woman particularly disdaining her since as the only other warrior woman, she felt a kinship with Shayera, yet found it bitter from the deception. While Shayera preferred to remain out of superheroics, she would relent occasionally, even knowing that the populace would still despise her no matter what she did to atone, yet did the right thing anyway, thus reflecting her good heart.

When Solomon Grundy returned from the dead and was wreaking havoc, she went to stop him out of hopes to find her simple friend still there; however, upon finding Grundy was a mindless husk, she reluctantly used her Nth metal mace to destroy him as to put him out of his misery, and protect the memory of his previous heroic sacrifice.

Most of the Justice League gradually forgave Shayera, even the sceptical Batman, but the longest holdout was Princess Diana. The Amazon's animosity was likely boosted by the fact that they were so similar, beyond gender, they were also warriors, spent most of their lives within insular societies, and were aliens to the world of the team; with all their similarities, Diana couldn't accept any reason for Shayera's betrayal. However, when they need to cooperate in a mission to foil Felix Faust and Tala, they cross paths with Hades; the God of Death alludes to a past paramour he had with Hippolyta, Diana's mother, yet Hippolyta never revealed that he might be Diana's father. Due to realising that even someone seeming as virtuous as her mother capable of deception, Diana acquiesced to forgiving Shayera, if only in small steps at a time.

Appearance: Red hair, red lips, green eyes, she wears a yellow and black crop top, yellow and black leggings, white short boots, and Thanagarian wings on her back.

Powers and Abilities

Hawkwoman uses Nth Metal to grant her flight, as the metal defies gravity and the abilities are controlled mentally. The Nth Metal also allows some form of protection against high pressures, allowing Hawkwoman to reach high altitudes. Another thing the Nth Metal does is grants her enhanced strength, though during the Golden Age, it seemed to come naturally. Hawkwoman uses traditional melee weapons, the primary of which being her Nth Metal Mace, but she also has skill with swords, spears and shields as her skills allow better use with them rather than the modern day weapons. The nth metal also grants Shayera a degree of resistance to injury and boosts her enhance strength (from her baseline of 600lbs to roughly 1 ton).

She has been seen to be able to carry at least 1 ton of weight. she has also withstood blows from the powerhouse Solomon Grundy and survived. (something not many can do) Thet Nth metal also gives her the ability to see for miles. She's also stated that she has enhanced hearing, but it is unknown whether it comes from the Nth metal.

Thanagarian Physiology: As a Thanagarian, Shayera Hol possesses several gifts that are common to members of her race, but set them apart from normal humans. A Thanagarian's life span is significantly greater than that of a normal human being. In the prime of her life, Shayera was actually older than many of Earth's senior citizens. A Thanagarian is also physically heartier than the average Earth human. They are stronger, with greater stamina and a greater resistance to pain. Thanagarians also possess enhanced senses.
