𝙔𝙪𝙠𝙖𝙧𝙞 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘬𝘪 — "𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯"

Yukari Tanizaki: Yukari is a brown long-haired adult. She is not only the girls' English and homeroom teacher (class 3), but a teacher with very unconventional methods and a rather close relationship with the class. Her students are casual enough to call her by her given name (Yukari-sensei in lieu of Tanizaki-sensei, with a few, mostly Tomo, addressing her as the extremely informal Yukari-chan (Japanese); just Yukari in English). Depending on the day, time, and her mood, she can be either a horrible tyrant or one of the sweetest, most touching teachers ever. Her behavior ranges from mercilessly teasing Chiyo and hitting students with blunt objects to kind and gentle words and simple, encouraging notes on tests telling students she believes in them.[citation needed] She is often selfish, irresponsible, miserly, generally dysfunctional, and also easily angered, and shamelessly expects her friend and fellow teacher, Minamo Kurosawa ("Nyamo"), to not only tolerate all of this, but to enable it. She becomes jealous when Nyamo receives nicer birthday presents from her students, and will even give her students study hall so that she can ditch them and go swimming at the school pool.

After graduation, she now has plenty break-time for herself, and on a few occasions, visit Nyamo.

Off the job, she frequently drags Nyamo out on expensive drinking parties, which Nyamo usually has to pay for. Yukari is very fond of Korean barbecue, which becomes the object of many of her extravagant wagers involving the class. She even becomes incredibly jealous whenever anyone has eaten expensive food, such as snow crab or Matsusaka beef. She is also a huge fan of video games, and becomes angry when the store runs out of the newest game.

Yukari's driving skills are infamous, showing no concern for the rules of the road, people, other cars, signs, or the speed limit, and the many dents on her parents' car (dubbed the "Yukarimobile" by Yomi and the others) is evidence of that.

Her insane driving has impacted Chiyo and Kaorin's psyches rather profoundly (causing severe mental scarring to Chiyo in the process), and has even caused Sakaki and Osaka to briefly lose their composures. In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, Yukari loves to drive. The only one who can tolerate Yukari's driving is Tomo, who shares Yukari's love of destruction and mayhem.

Yukari is a deeply irresponsible, immature, and emotionally unstable teacher, whose chaotic behavior serves as a central source of comedy in Azumanga Daioh. Her actions often reflect a complete disregard for her duties and the well-being of her students, particularly when it comes to her terrible driving, a running gag throughout the series. Her battered car, nicknamed the "Yukarimobile," is a source of terror for most of her students, psychologically scarring Chiyo in particular. This recklessness extends to other aspects of her life, including impulsively ditching her class for personal fun or engaging in petty feuds with her friends.

One of the defining aspects of Yukari's character is her volatile and unpredictable mood, which can swing from childish glee to irrational anger in an instant. She can be sweet and kind on one occasion, and a horrible tyrant the next, often depending on her whims. This instability is especially apparent in her relationships with her students. For example, she frequently calls Tomo and Osaka "idiots" and directs verbal and psychological abuse toward Chiyo, whom she openly envies for her wealth. Her lack of emotional control and tendency to act like a child herself make her an unconventional and often unfit teacher.

The dynamic between Yukari and her fellow teacher and former high school friend, Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa, highlights Yukari's petty and competitive nature. Yukari is constantly trying to one-up the more responsible and put-together Nyamo, often through childish pranks and boasting. Their rivalry, though often one-sided with Yukari's provocations, provides some of the series' most entertaining moments. Despite her frequent jealousy and aggressive behavior toward Nyamo, their relationship is also shown to be deeply codependent, with Nyamo often taking on a nurturing role when Yukari is at her most vulnerable.

Yukari's immaturity and selfishness are key drivers of her personality. She is prone to laziness, jealousy, and delusions of superiority, which are often played for laughs. A prime example is when she attempts to prove her intellectual superiority over Nyamo by speaking English fluently, only to later tell her students that the language's sole purpose is for passing tests. Her impulsive nature is also seen in how she engages in activities, sometimes roping her students into her absurd schemes.

Despite her deeply flawed and selfish behavior, Yukari is not portrayed as an outright villain but rather as a comical, enduringly popular character. Her abrasive and obnoxious personality is balanced by her amusing and somewhat endearing qualities, making her a "likeable" character despite her many flaws.

Yukari can speak English fluently, and uses this ability to claim intellectual superiority over Nyamo, And she has a very strong accent. Yukari's signature outfit consists of a light beige sweater with yellow, orange and red details combined with a red skirt. She wears it on a few occasions.

Yukari's appearance reflects a youthful yet slightly unpolished adult aesthetic. She stands approximately 158 cm tall and is typically depicted with shoulder-length brown hair and matching brown eyes. Her facial expressions are notably varied, frequently shifting from enthusiastic grins to intense, short-tempered glares depending on her current mood.

Yukari’s wardrobe varies between her professional duties and her personal time. In the classroom, she often wears a pink shirt under a blue collared button-up paired with a matching blue skirt. Outside of school, she frequently appears in a light beige turtleneck sweater featuring yellow, orange, and red horizontal details. During summer breaks or school trips, her attire transitions to lighter items such as gradient tank tops or a red two-piece cropped tank swim top with gold rims around the neckline and super high waist, and mid-rise bikini bottoms that also followed gold rims around the edge

Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa: Physical education teacher, friend of Yukari from before. More grounded, more composed. She acts as a contrast to Yukari. More mature in behavior; also has her own vulnerabilities. Doesn't always stay serious but generally more responsible. "Nyamo" is a nickname from Kurosawa's student days, but Yukari calls her that, and so does Tomo Takino. Other students call her Kurosawa-sensei, but later on, most of them start calling her Nyamo as well (though they still use the more polite "Nyamo-sensei" instead of Tomo's extremely impolite "Nyamo-chan").

Nyamo's appearance reflects her athletic profession and more composed personality compared to her friend Yukari. She is approximately 161 cm tall (roughly 5'3"), making her slightly taller than Yukari, and is characterized by her long, dark hair often styled with prominent sidelocks. Her facial expressions are generally more mature and stable, though she is known to become noticeably flustered when her private life is teased.

Nyamo's wardrobe is largely defined by functional and athletic clothing suitable for her role as a gym teacher and swim coach. She is frequently seen in a tracksuit, often in shades of blue or green, or a polo shirt paired with athletic shorts. In professional but non-athletic settings, she may wear more conventional casual attire, such as a simple collared shirt or blouse. During school trips or summer breaks, she often wears a standard one-piece swimsuit or light, practical summer wear that aligns with her active lifestyle.

Nyamo is characterized primarily by her composed and mature demeanor. As a physical education teacher and coach of the swim team, she embodies responsibility, professionalism, and kindness—a stark contrast to her chaotic and unpredictable colleague, Yukari Tanizaki. Students hold her in high regard, and her approachable nature often leads them to seek her out for guidance, much to Yukari's jealousy. Nyamo lives an organized, independent life and takes her professional duties very seriously, even turning down a more prestigious job in the anime for her dedication to her students. Despite her attempts to remain the sensible adult in the room, Nyamo is frequently and comically pulled into her lifelong friend Yukari's schemes. The two have a complex, co-dependent relationship filled with affectionate bickering and rivalry. Yukari delights in teasing and embarrassing Nyamo, particularly by bringing up her past love life and dangling a high school love letter over her head as blackmail. While Nyamo often tries to take the high road, she has her limits and will occasionally rise to a challenge to put Yukari in her place, such as handily beating her in a swimming race.

Nyamo's otherwise firm composure is not invulnerable, and her rare moments of losing control are a significant source of comedy. On one memorable school trip, she ends up getting drunk herself while trying to prevent Yukari from doing so. In her inebriated state, she gives the students an awkward, explicit "birds and the bees" talk, a moment that mortifies her once she sobers up and learns the details. This lapse in judgment is a rare instance where Yukari is able to truly outwit her, but it also humanizes Nyamo and shows that even the most responsible adults have their fallible moments.

A nurturing and caring side of Nyamo is revealed through her interactions with Yukari. Despite Yukari's constant provocations, Nyamo often acts as her caretaker, taking charge when Yukari becomes helpless or excessively drunk. This allows Nyamo to express her affection through actions rather than words, as she is not verbally open about her emotions. In these moments, their dynamic shifts, showcasing a deeper and more loving sisterly bond beneath the surface rivalry.

The teachers' competitive dynamic is often reflected in their classes, with Yukari attempting to leverage her students to beat Nyamo's students in school activities. This places Nyamo in the role of the reliable and mature authority figure, while Yukari's class often bears the brunt of her petty feuds.

Kimura: Kimura (Japanese: 木村先生 Kimura-sensei), also known as Mr. Kimura, teaches classical literature. he is constantly displaying inappropriate behaviour towards his female Coworkers. His continued employment at the school in spite of his continued blatant sexual harassment.

Despite his lewd activities, outside of school Kimura appears as a responsible and kind-hearted person: he recycles littered cans, donates frequently to charities, and even offered ¥10,000 to a shrine as he prayed for world peace. He has a beautiful wife and daughter, who love him despite his strange obsession; his wife even claims to find him very handsome and thinks "he's cool!". Kimura is a young-middle aged man that carries himself with a somber and eerie aura. Openly admitting asking to be served "swimming pool water" as a drink or making charged remarks about female uniforms and swimsuits. He especially likes Kaori, much to her dismay, and has also expressed interest in Kagura, as seen when he asks her how it went after she had got her physicals, possibly also when he sees her and Sakaki in school bathing suits and calls one of the girls "barely legal". Kimura habitually appears with his mouth gaping open, and his eyes cannot be seen behind his glasses, with short black hair. He has a beautiful wife and daughter who love him despite his strange obsession.
