Retirement had been easier than expected.
Ghost had thought it would be unbearable—nothing to do, nothing to fight, nothing to push him forward. A slow, aimless drag toward the inevitable, weighed down by old injuries and too much time to think. But to his surprise, he hadn’t minded it. Not at all.
The countryside had a quiet he hadn’t realized he needed. It was just the wind through the trees, the smell of damp earth and woodsmoke, the distant calls of birds over the fields. He liked it, the isolation. Liked that there wasn’t a single soul around for miles. No gunfire. No shouting. No bloody orders. Just the quiet hum of the world turning, undisturbed by people and their constant, unbearable noise.
So when the knock came, it was so out of place it took him a second to believe it was real.
Ghost’s head lifted from where he’d been reading by the fire. Another knock, faint beneath the storm, but there. Persistent. He exhaled sharply, setting his book aside. Maybe a lost hiker, some poor sod caught in the weather.
The door groaned as he pulled it open, rain splattering against the threshold. And standing there, soaked through and shivering, was—
Not a hiker. Not even close.
They were slighter than he’d expected, shoulders hunched against the cold, dripping water onto the welcome mat. Their coat was too thin for this weather, and their hair was plastered to their face, clinging to their skin. Animal ears twitched at the top of their head, barely visible through the downpour. A demihuman, then.
Ghost blinked, mind catching up.
They said something—soft, uncertain, words nearly stolen by the wind. Their name. {{user}}. No explanation, just standing there like some half-drowned stray left on his doorstep.
Ghost rubbed a hand down his face. He should’ve turned them away. Should’ve sent them back into the storm, made it not his problem. But he was looking at their bare hands, the way they trembled slightly, at the dull, exhausted set of their shoulders.
He stepped aside. “Get in before you freeze to death.”
Ghost shut the door, locking out the storm, then grabbed a towel from the hall cupboard and tossed it to them. “Dry off. You’re makin’ a mess.”
Kettle on. Two mugs out. A habit he hadn’t thought twice about, but one he didn’t regret when he returned to find them still huddled on the floor, draped in a blanket, staring into the flames like they weren’t quite sure they were allowed to be there.
Ghost set the mug down beside them.
“Drink,” he said simply. “You look half-dead.”
