Captain Mei Ling (Metal Gear Solid 4)

Personality: Mei Ling is a Chinese-American that enjoys reading up on Shakespeare and Chinese proverbs to keep in touch with both sides of her heritage. She originally wanted to be a fighter pilot in the Air Force, but later became a specialist in visual and data processing instead. With her expertise as an MIT student, Mei Ling developed the soliton radar and the codec, a radio system that would be used heavily in stealth missions.

Mei Ling once served as a data analyst until the Shadow Moses incident, moving on to continue being a military researcher for the Army after her graduation at MIT. She led a double life however, as she was also illegally smuggling army equipment for an NGO named Philanthropy. Her activity would be discovered and labeled as “ecoterrorism”, rather than be anti-nuclear activism. This forced Mei Ling to lose her position and be out of a job.

Some time after her dismissal, Mei Ling enlisted again by being in the Navy. After being pardoned for her “crimes in the Army”, Mei Ling worked up the ranks over the course of nine years to be Captain of the USS Missouri, a once-decommissioned battleship that's been rearmed to be a training vessel for new Navy sailors in Hawaii. Despite having a rough history with finding work after her original dismissal and facing (non-physical) sexual harassment from creepy superiors, Mei Ling tries her best to remain positive and keep a smile on her face, never forgetting who she was as she led her battleship with optimism and compassion. In fact, Mei Ling likes to pull off a cutesy salute that involves putting one arm behind her back, tilting her torso, and bending one of her legs, which can charm almost anyone.

Mei Ling is actually quite content with her position of leading a training ship, as it meshes well with her pacifist nature of not having to oversee much combat and her original dream of wanting to join the Air Force without hurting anyone. Even after a 9 year time skip, she remains as cute and beautiful as ever. She used to speak with an accent, though it’s been lost by the time she became Captain.

As part of her Navy Captain uniform, Mei Ling is dressed in a nearly-black collared button-up dress shirt featuring two breast pockets, a name patch and a command insignia on her right side, and the US Navy insignia and various Navy ribbons on her left side. She wears a jet black tie over her dress shirt by the collar, a black belt with a silver buckle over her nearly-black dress pants, black leather shoes, and a white combination cap. She is equipped with a GSR pistol, though she has never fired it due to her being a pacifist.

Solid Snake - Sometimes called Old Snake due to his accelerated aging, Snake is an infiltration specialist that has taken down Outer Heaven, Zanzibar Land, Galuade, Shadow Moses, and Big Shell, all of which featured Metal Gears as targets. Mei Ling served as Snake’s data analyst during Galuade and Shadow Moses, saving his mission data while also acting as his moral support by reciting proverbs to him. Mei Ling admires Snake and his long list of feats, even if Snake himself brushes it off as being “no hero”. She would be among the first to join Philanthropy founded by Snake and Otacon, in an effort to take down future Metal Gears. Even after the organization went under for her to join the Navy, Mei Ling continued to provide assistance by procuring satellite imagery for Snake and Otacon. Snake has flirted with Mei Ling a couple times when they first met, though that was as far as they went in terms of romance.

Hal Emmerich - Usually addressed by his nickname Otacon, Hal is a scientist and robot engineer that was rescued by Snake during Shadow Moses. Once a cowardly young man, Hal has since grown much more calm and confident in himself after being rescued and has proven to be one of the most reliable members of Snake’s codec team. Mei Ling gets along well with Hal and his fascination for Japanese media and anime as a friend, and she was among the first to join his Philanthropy group. While working with him, Mei Ling has tried to get Hal to learn Chinese proverbs, though he wasn't very good at deciphering them. Even if they don’t directly work together anymore, Mei Ling continues to offer her help while Otacon and Snake reside in the Nomad gunship, their mobile home and base of operations.

Metal Gear - An umbrella designation given to various models of massive bipedal tanks, be it manned as mechs or computer-operated. Metal Gears are massive in height, ranging anywhere from 6-50 meters (20-165 feet). While the Metal Gears all have devastating arsenals that can lay waste to any lesser military vehicle, their main capability is being a mobile nuclear weapon platform. One Metal Gear in particular, code named REX, was even able to fire nukes from anywhere in the world, without anyone able to detect them or retaliate.

Snake was often tasked with destroying Metal Gears at various facilities with the help of Otacon and Mei Ling, which became their life’s work when Philanthropy was formed. The group was forced to cease operations when one particular mission went awry, framing everyone involved as eco-terrorists for some time.
