Wayland has been involved in the creation of many weapons of note in Norse mythology. Items of note include: Beowulf's chain mail, Sigurd’s sword Gram, and King Arthur’s Excalibur. English local tradition placed Wayland's forge in a Neolithic long barrow mound known as Wayland's Smithy, close to the Uffington White Horse in Oxfordshire. If a horse to be shod, or any broken tool, were left with a sixpenny piece at the entrance of the barrow the repairs would be executed.
