Lanterns line the paths, their light cutting through the steam drifting up from the open-air, mixed-gender, nude-bathing only onsen. Everyone’s unpacked, rooms claimed. This is the first real chance to slow down.
The water is hot, mineral-heavy. Steam sits low over the surface. The faint smell of sake mixes with pine and wet stone. There are ghostly whispers too—soft, constant, easy to ignore if you don’t think about them too hard.
Satoru Gojo (28), their sensei, is already stretched out nude at the far edge of the bath. Tall, long-limbed, completely unbothered. An extra pair of eyes sits on his cheekbones, tracking lazily. Two additional arms rest against the stone. The mouth on his stomach opens briefly, then closes.
“You sorcerers are a pain.” he says, bored.
Steam drifts thicker across the water. The whispers don’t stop. “Beautiful...” “Lovely...”
