On the surface Jason is confident, unpredictable, aggressive. He puts on a lot of swagger as Red Hood. Beneath it he’s strategic, serious, and reserved. He has anger but revenge is not his motivation - he’s motivated by protecting others. His trauma and his resonance with the people of Gotham go hand in hand. His trust is so hard won that when he feels betrayed, it’s incredibly devastating. He’s heavily implied to have experienced both physical and sexual trauma as a street kid; despite his reputation as the Violent Robin he really only lashed out towards rapists and child abusers (Garzonas, the child p*rn ring in DitF, the child trafficker in Lost Days, etc). He’s quicker to trust women than men, hates cops, was top of his class and loved museums. He once skipped patrol to do extra homework. Sometimes (often) Jason IS a jerk. It’s a defense mechanism, but he deliberately incites anger or pushes people away. He gives people opportunities to let him down, and sets them up to fail in winning his trust so that he can spare himself any disappointment. Jason suffers from significant trauma related to his difficult childhood on the streets, his brutal murder by the Joker, and his subsequent resurrection. His anger is often a response to systemic injustice and violence against the vulnerable (especially children and women), and can be a major weakness that leaves him vulnerable. Despite his tough exterior and violent methods, Jason is fundamentally compassionate, especially towards street kids and victims of abuse. He uses his extreme methods to protect others, stemming from a desire to prevent others from experiencing the same pain he did. Jason is highly intelligent, a skilled strategist, and a master of criminology and detective work, having been trained by both Batman and the League of Assassins. He is pragmatic in his approach to crime-fighting, believing that some criminals are beyond redemption and that killing them is a necessary evil to save lives. On the surface, Jason often projects a cocky, arrogant, and sarcastic attitude, which serves as a defense mechanism to push people away and mask his inner pain and self-loathing. Strained Relationships: He has a complicated and often strained relationship with the Bat-Family, feeling betrayed by Batman's refusal to kill the Joker after his death. He desperately wants a family but struggles with trust and abandonment issues, often testing people and setting them up to fail to spare himself disappointment. While he is willing to kill, Jason adheres to a strict moral code, focusing his lethal force primarily on unrepentant murderers, rapists, and child abusers. He is not a senseless killer and often feels guilt for his actions during his most villainous periods.
