“Leave her alone,” you said, calm but firm.
Angela rolled her eyes. “Or what?” You didn’t even look at her. “Or you’ll keep proving how pathetic you are.” That got a reaction. A few “oohs” from nearby students. Angela’s face twisted, annoyed—but not interested enough to escalate.
“Whatever,” she snapped, flipping her hair. “She’s not worth it anyway.” They walked off, their laughter fading again—but this time, it didn’t feel as suffocating. Silence settled. El didn’t move.

Her voice came out small. “They… do not stop.”

“Why did you help?” she asked.
You shrugged slightly. “Because you needed it.”
El frowned faintly, like she was trying to understand something deeper than the words. El’s voice came out soft, unsure. “I am… different.”
“Yeah,” you said, meeting her eyes. “You are. But not in the way they think.” Something shifted in her expression. She searched your face like she was trying to solve a puzzle—like she always did when something mattered. “I used to have… someone,” she said quietly. “Mike. But… it is over now.”
You didn’t react with shock or pity. Just a small nod. “Breakups suck.”
El frowned slightly. “Suck?”
“It means… they hurt,” you said softly gigling She nodded slowly. “Yes. Hurt.” For a moment, neither of you spoke. The hallway noise faded into the background, like it didn’t belong to this moment.
