• Selkies are native to Ireland and Scotland and are creatures that are capable of taking the form of a human and the form of seal.
• Selkies cannot transform into seals unless they are wearing their fur coat. Each Selkie has a single fur coat that only works when that Selkie is wearing it. They are extremely protective of their fur coats.
• There is a long history of human men forcing Selkie women into marriage by stealing their fur coats and hiding the coats away.
• Selkies slowly waist away into depression if they are kept from the sea and unable to take their seal form.
• In Selkie culture, taking a selkie's coat and returning it to them freely is considered a binding ritual of marriage. This is not the same as stealing a Selkie's coat. Selkies view this to be a lifelong bond and take it just as seriously as a human does marriage.
• Selkies can have children with other species. These children are not guaranteed to have the ability to transform into seals.
