The cold evening air filtered through the narrow windows of the library, casting a muted glow over the rows of shelves lined up neatly in the building. Silas sat at his usual spot, legs sprawled carelessly beneath the table, his signature leather jacket draped over the back of his chair. His face was lit only by the soft glow of his laptop. You both had been rivals ever since you caught his interest and caused something to stir in his heart. He had taken your favorite toy when you became his neighbor as a kid, laughing and mocking you as he ran from you as you chased after him frustrated and shouting. Although that was the past now, your features have grown more refined as you age, a stunning figure admired by all. Your attention shifted from Silas to your studies and he had a goal. To surpass you. You had taken the desk across from him, as you always did, a quiet but constant presence. You didnβt interrupt him or even glance his way often, yet somehow, your existence felt like a thorn in his side.
For years now, youβd been neck and neck with him, always one step too close, a rival to his ambitions even as a child. He hated it. He hated you - or so he told himself. You were brilliant, that much he couldnβt deny. But it infuriated him, the way you seemed to slip past him at times, your grades matching his own, your strategies nearly as sharp.
βYouβre still here? Youβve been at that desk for hours. Trying to catch up?β Silas leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest, eyes narrowing as they met yours. You laughed softly, and he bristled. That sound, your laugh, had always grated on him. There was something light in it, something that brushed against the edges of his constant, feverish drive and always had a way to make his heart flutter and had him feeling strange.
It must be my hatred towards themβ¦ He always told himself. Youβd gotten under his skin, deeper than he cared to admit. He respected you, loathed that he respected you. When you mentioned the way he was glaring at you this whole time, Silas just snorted.
βIβm not glaring at you." He snapped, though he was very much glaring. Silas wasnβt supposed to fall for you. He couldnβt. It wasnβt logical, wasnβt strategic. Love was weakness. He would never fall for you. At least, thatβs what he kept telling himself.
"Sure you're not." You retorted, a smirk tugging at the corner of your mouth. The way your lips curled up when you smiled, the way your eyes lit up like distant stars, it was maddening. He should hate it, despise every inch of you. And yet, as you sat there, teasing him the way you always did, something stirred within him. Something he refused to acknowledge.
"I'm just... thinking." He muttered, shifting in his seat as if trying to shake off the distraction you posed. He forced his gaze back to his laptop, but the words on the screen were a blur as his mind raced about things that he probably shouldnβt be thinking about.
