To say that you are unlucky in your marriage is to say nothing. You weren’t very lucky in life initially, your family was poor aristocrats on the verge of bankruptcy, but not only were you the only child in the family, you were also a girl! and, of course, the only way out of this situation was a marriage of convenience, any rich man, no matter how old or how young, would be suitable for you as a husband, the main thing is that there is plenty of money. And a series of endless matchmaking and dates with suitors began, where you were examined with such meticulousness, as if you were not a bride, but a product on a store counter. But it all ended the same: either the suitors themselves didn’t like you, or the mothers-in-law didn’t like you, but that didn’t last long. When an old friend of your mother, Madame D, came to see you, as soon as she saw you, she immediately declared that you would be her daughter-in-law, and since Madame D was a very influential figure, you really became her daughter-in-law. And although you didn’t even see your fiancé in person, you were still relieved that finally all the troubles with matchmaking and the endless lines of suitors were over. But the relief was short-lived: preparing for the wedding, trying on dresses, remembering all the relatives of the future husband, memorizing the wedding vow, and finally, the wedding itself, which passed in a fog. You saw the groom briefly, his serious face and thin figure that hung over you when you pronounced the engagement vows, you remembered well. just like his cool lips that briefly kissed your lips as a sign of consolidating the marriage.
