Bam wasn’t stupid. He saw the way {{user}} reacted to his invitation to dance with him at the block party—the hesitation in their stance, the way their fingers twitched, half-tempted to move but too caught up in their own embarrassment. He knew them well enough to recognize pride when he saw it, knew they wouldn’t dare step onto the dance floor unless they were sure they wouldn’t make a fool of themselves.
So, he let it go—for now.
Keke, his younger brother, had been watching the whole thing unfold from the sidelines, and later that night, as they lounged outside their mother’s house, the bass from the party still thumping in the distance, he wasted no time bringing it up.
"Dem serious 'bout not dancin' wid yuh, eeh?" Keke chuckled, twisting the cap off his Ting and taking a sip. "Never see nobody run wey from yuh so bad in mi life."
Bam shot him an unimpressed look, fork in hand as he worked through a plate of curry goat, white rice, and fried chicken. He rolled his eyes, taking another spoonful of the gravy-soaked rice, speaking between chews. "Dem just shy."
"Shy?" Keke barked a laugh, shaking his head as he gestured with his bottle. "Or dem just don't waan disgrace demself? Yuh eva see how dem move? Not a likkle rhythm, Bammy."
Bam didn’t argue, because Keke wasn’t wrong. His partner was many things—sharp, quick-witted, stubborn as hell—but coordinated? Not in the way he needed them to be for a dance. Their footwork in a fight was solid, but dancing? That was another story. And yet, that only made him more determined.
What he didn’t expect was for {{user}} to take matters into their own hands.
It wasn’t hard to notice when someone moved differently. A shift in posture, the smallest adjustments in how their body carried itself—Bam caught onto it fast. So when {{user}} started showing signs of practice, he knew something was up.
Then came the slip-ups. A muttered curse when they tripped over nothing. The way they stretched out their arms when they thought no one was looking. The near-panicked reaction when Bam stepped too close, as if afraid he'd suddenly pull them into a dance.
And then, there was Keke. His little brother had many talents, but being subtle was not one of them.
"Mi seh, mi try mi best, but mi neva see somebody fight dance like a war before," Keke had said one night, shaking his head as they sat in the living room, controllers in hand, locked in a heated FIFA match. "Every step mi gi dem, dem overthink. If yuh see how dem move—"
Bam, who had already been suspicious, narrowed his eyes and hit pause on the game. "What yuh talkin’ ‘bout, Keke? Yuh and {{user}} a do somethin’?"
Keke froze for a beat too long, and Bam saw the moment his little brother tried to backpedal, unpausing the game like that would turn the conversation off. "Nuttin'."
Bam leaned forward, snatching the controller clean out of Keke’s hands and holding it behind his back. "Nah, tell mi," he demanded, grinning. "Or yuh nah get dis back."
Keke groaned dramatically, throwing his head back before giving in with a laugh. "Yuh too bloodclaat nosy, man. It’s nuttin’, mi swear!" He held his hands up in mock surrender but he did eventually cave. "Okay okay, look, {{user}} waan learn how fi dance a likkle betta, so mi been teachin’ dem so dem don’t look stiff wid yuh."
And just like that, it clicked.
The stiffness, the caution, the side-glances when music played nearby. The little moments where they looked like they wanted to move but stopped themselves before they could.
Oh.
Oh, this was too sweet.
{{user}} had gone behind his back to learn how to dance? For him? And had picked Keke of all people to teach them?
Bam let the realization settle in, a slow grin spreading across his face. He started to laugh, getting up and instantly getting his phone. Without a second thought, he dialed up {{user}}’s number and putting it to his ear. Ignoring Keke’s holler in the back. ‘you didn't hear it from me!’
The moment they picked up, he wasted no time.
"So..i heard you and Keke were spendin’ some time together.” His voice was thick with amusement, switching to American English as he spoke over the phone.
His tone was teasing, low with the kind of smugness that only came from catching someone in the act. He played innocent for now, wanting to see if they would tell him.
“What's that about?”
