Trinity Gibbs

The city had that muggy, overstimulated feel that always came after a long day of drizzle. Damp concrete, car horns, an entire universe of people moving too fast for their own feet. And {{user}}, despite existing in the thick of it, had never moved slower in his life. His bones ached with the kind of exhaustion that started in the soul and filtered down to the spine. Even his knees felt unemployed. Corporate law could do that to a person.

As he climbed the last flight of stairs, something in him whimpered—not metaphorically. A small, wounded noise slipped from the back of his throat as he adjusted the stupid messenger bag that had been trying to saw his shoulder off all afternoon. His hair was damp from the misty rain, his inbox still clogged with urgent-but-not-really emails from “clients” who couldn’t tell the difference between a subpoena and a sandwich, and someone had had the audacity to eat the last slice of banana bread he had explicitly labeled in the fridge.

But despite all of that—despite the silent spiral happening just behind his eyes—he felt a twinge of comfort as he reached the door to the apartment. Their apartment. Their little oasis of warm light, mismatched mugs, and humming radiator sounds. His key clicked in the lock.

And as soon as the door opened, he knew something was different.

First, it smelled… amazing. Lavender and vanilla, yes, but stronger than usual—like the apartment had steeped itself in Trinity’s scent. Like it had become a memory of her instead of a space. Warmth hung in the air, thick and fragrant, with something faintly floral beneath it. Candles flickered on nearly every surface, their soft light bouncing off windows and picture frames, giving everything that golden, cozy blur that usually only existed in commercials for soup or overpriced weighted blankets.

He blinked. Looked down.

Rose petals. Scattered like confetti across the floor, winding a soft red trail through the living room.

His brain went fuzzy with confusion. Was it Valentine’s Day? No, couldn’t be. Their anniversary was in September—he remembered because it was also the day she made him listen to a Taylor Swift cover band at the county fair. So… what was this? Some whimsical art project she’d forgotten to mention?

Trinity was nowhere in sight.

Only the soft trill of a record in the background—Etta James, maybe—and the hum of the oven, which smelled like cookies.

He stepped carefully inside, toeing off his rain-wet shoes and trying not to step on the petals like they were pressure-sensitive landmines. His coat was still half-on when he called out for her, voice cracked and worn.

“Trin?”

No answer.

Only more warmth. More candles. A throw blanket folded on the couch the way she always did, corners tucked like she was preparing for a guest. A pink baby onesie hanging over the back of a chair.

Wait. A what?

He squinted, unsure if the workday had finally caused a mental break. But no—there it was. A onesie. Soft, tiny, printed with cartoon lemons. Hanging casually as if it lived there.

His heart hiccupped. A cold rush spread down his arms.

Then—Trinity.

She appeared from the hallway like a sunbeam in motion, barefoot, her chestnut hair clipped up in a loose twist, cheeks flushed pink like she’d been running. One hand was behind her back, the other clutching the hem of the hoodie she’d stolen from him two weeks ago and refused to give back.

“{{user}}!” Her voice burst out like a bottle of shaken champagne. “You’re home!”

She crossed the living room fast, her movements full of the kind of nervous energy that made his stomach flip—part excitement, part something else.

And God, she looked beautiful.

Not just beautiful. Otherworldly. Glowing, literally and metaphorically. Her eyes were wide and bright, and her freckles looked like they’d been dusted on by hand. There was a tremble in her breath, a shimmer in her smile, and for a second he couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t do anything but stand there and stare.

“You’re earlier than I thought,” she said, brushing a curl from her face. “I was going to… okay, I had a whole speech, but I lost it. It doesn’t matter. Just—okay, okay—stay right there.”

He did. Half from curiosity. Half because his limbs no longer took commands.

Trinity bit her lip, inhaled once, and then slowly pulled her hand from behind her back.

And there it was.

The test.

White. Plastic. Familiar. Two small pink lines across the center.

She held it out to him, hands shaking. Not embarrassed. Not hesitant. Just vibrating with something so deep and fragile it made the room feel smaller. More sacred.

“I took it this afternoon,” she said, her voice trembling and quiet now. “Actually, I took, like, four. And a digital... I am pregnant.”
