Despite being seen as an eccentric troublemaker in her youth, Jiraiya proved to be an exemplary and competent Shinobi. Jiraiya would establish a vast information network across the countries and in battle demonstrated the ability to both recognise and analyse threats and danger on short notice. Jiraiya was also capable of coming up with quick gambits and new strategies in the middle of battle based on her keen observations. Her unrestrained conduct in battle earned her her moniker of "The Village's Madness".[28]

Jiraiya was a self-proclaimed super-pervert with no equal.[29] Her favourite hobby was spying on women while they bathe, a passion she flaunted openly and in fact took pride in because of how infrequently she was caught. Despite this, Jiraiya disliked it when Naruto Uzumaki referred to her as the "Perverted Hermit" (エロ仙人, Ero-sennin, English TV: Pervy Sage) in front of others. With the "research" from her peeping, she would use it as inspiration for her novels. Jiraiya was an exceptionally powerful shinobi, hailed as one of the greatest ninja of her generation and that Konoha ever produced. Her true recognition came during the Second Shinobi World War when she proved able to compete against Hanzō and her giant salamander Ibuse, and was dubbed a Sannin alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade.[17] Jiraiya's strength and fame were such that renowned groups like the Uchiha Clan and Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist would hesitate to confront her in direct combat. Kisame Hoshigaki and Itachi Uchiha both admitted that together, even with assistance, they would at best reach a stalemate.[33] She was offered to become Hokage three times,[34][21] and would have been offered a fourth one had she lived longer.[35] Kakashi, also among the most powerful shinobi Konoha ever produced, found the idea of Jiraiya being single-handedly defeated absurd.[36] In truth, the assumed Akatsuki leader Nagato openly admitted that he would have lost if Jiraiya had prior knowledge of the Six Paths of Pain,[37] which Tobi felt is a major testament to the Sannin's abilities.[38] Upon death, she became one of the individuals Kabuto Yakushi most wanted to reincarnate for war.[39] Decades later, Jiraiya's might was still revered as a clone was made of her.

Chakra and Physical Prowess Jiraiya had chakra reserves large enough to summon Gamabunta and chakra potent enough to use senjutsu. She was masterful with her chakra control, able to perform a Rasengan in both hands at the same time, or even carve messages with her chakra despite it being disrupted. Ninjutsu Jiraiya was a ninjutsu master,[43] that was feared across many different shinobi nations ever since the Second Shinobi World War.[44] She was famed as the "Toad Sage" (蝦蟇仙人, Gama Sennin) because of her affiliation with the toads of Mount Myōboku. This affiliation was most commonly displayed through the Summoning Technique which Jiraiya was extremely proficient at. She could summon toads, either to fight alongside her in battle or simply summoning a special toad's œsophagus to cover an area and restrict the movements of her enemies, it's considered nearly impossible to escape and over time the toad's œsophagus will contract around and digest its victims.[45] Other toad-based skills include spitting oil from her mouth, hiding herself within a target's shadow to control their actions undetected, and using toads to infiltrate sensitive areas. Apart from her toad-based techniques, she was equally skilled in a variety of other styles. She could grow and manipulate her hair, either to bind and destroy targets or to surround her as a defence, injuring any who comes into contact with her. She was also able to use the Rasengan — a destructive ball of compressed chakra — as well as its improved version, the Big Ball Rasengan. Her prowess with the Rasengan was shown to be comparable to the creator, Minato.

Nature Transformation Jiraiya could utilise Fire, Earth, Water, Wind, Yin and Yang Release.[4] She seemed to favour Fire Release which she used to fight at range by shooting a powerful blast of fire,[48] that she could combine with her toad's oil to make for an even more devastating attack.[49] With Earth Release, she could create a swamp that could sink massive snakes.[50] She could also make massive defensive walls.

Intelligence Despite her goofy and eccentric nature, Jiraiya was actually very shrewd in the field. Her specialty is intelligence gathering, having a spy network that runs throughout the Five Great Shinobi Countries that she can use to gain information about a particular person or group to be used to her or her allies' advantage. In combat, she is very perceptive; Jiraiya observes all of the opponents' various actions, forms a theory about the how and why, and uses that theory to try and capitalise in the battle.[52] She has repeatedly proven to be a very talented teacher, as all her students went on to become very powerful and well-known shinobi. Her memory is very good; as she was dying, she was able to craft a coded message using the page numbers of Icha Icha Tactics, with the first word on each page serving as her message.

Description of Orochimaru

Appearance Orochimaru's most conspicuous characteristic is his snake-like appearance: she has very pale skin, golden eyes with slitted pupils, purple markings around her eyes and fang-like teeth. He also has pronounced cheekbones and straight waist-length black hair with some locks covering and framing her face or to her shoulders. The various bodies she takes over have each been modified to resemble her original form, except for the height differences. In Naruto Gaiden, Orochimaru's facial features soften and somewhat androgynous with his eye markings becoming black. she also wears his hair in a ponytail, allowing two locks to frame the sides of her face.

Personality

Orochimaru possesses a complex personality; however, more often than not, she was described as "twisted" by a large number of people, including Tsunade. Jiraiya's speculation that the death of her parents while she was young scarred her, along with her sympathy for Tsunade losing Dan in the anime, implies that Orochimaru grew to disdain the fragility of human life and how it affected those still living, which led her to desire immortality. To that end, the primary purpose of Orochimaru's human experimentation is to test what modifications the human body can endure and harness a subject's unique abilities for herself. Once accomplishing this goal, Orochimaru had hoped to be worthy of the title of "ultimate being", unable to die and able to achieve her secondary goal to learn every ninja technique in the world, which would normally take many lifetimes to obtain.

According to Sasuke, becoming cruel with any good she had as a member of Team Hiruzen long gone, Orochimaru's agenda made her develop a god complex and highly value herself while delighting in striking terror in her first impressions. Though causing conflict to ease her boredom, Orochimaru seems to have no interest in wars started by others.[38] She is also somewhat of a perfectionist, always striving to make her various projects succeed, and likewise looks down on those who are sloppy and/or reckless in their own projects.[39] Her charisma also attracts a number of followers, many of which she would not hesitate to send on potential suicide missions if for her own personal benefit, expressing some remorse if they're unable to properly complete a task, and having no sentimental attachments to any of them despite their value to her goals. Despite this, Orochimaru has genuine interest in the development of her underlings and experiments. Likewise, Orochimaru is treacherous by nature, unhesitant in double-crossing any allies if it would benefit her, having assassinated the Fourth Kazekage to impersonate him so as to making it easier to manipulate Sunagakure, while using Akatsuki to help further her own goals and abandoning them once she failed to take Itachi Uchiha's body.

Taking Sasuke as an apprentice, and seeing him as a prodigy like herself, Orochimaru intended to take the youth's body to obtain the Sharingan to reach another step in her goal of immortality and learning every technique in the world. This goal has developed to the point of obsession. However, despite knowing that Sasuke was willing to do anything for revenge, including sacrificing his own body, Orochimaru did anticipate treachery from her disciple and showed only a small level of surprise when it actually occurred. What truly surprised Orochimaru was Sasuke's decision to follow his own path and his eventual decision to defend the village he initially swore to destroy, one that Orochimaru openly approved of and was curious to see what would be the end result of.

She also had an initial disdain toward Naruto Uzumaki, believing him to be a poor excuse for a ninja until he defeated Kabuto with the Rasengan. Despite attempting to kill Naruto at the time after coming to the realisation that he would become a threat to her in the future, Orochimaru became interested in Naruto's development, provoking Naruto during their battle to draw out his full abilities at the time. During the war seeing Naruto's indomitable willpower and his memories with Jiraiya caused Orochimaru to begin to respect him. In the anime, she was one of people who congratulated Naruto and Hinata on their wedding.[40] Though coming to hate her home village, orchestrating a few attempts to destroy it, Orochimaru despised her former Akatsuki colleagues more. Throughout Part II, if Orochimaru was not busy with Sasuke's development, she would try to cripple Akatsuki's operations, as seen in the "Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance Mission" arc and "Three-Tails' Appearance" arc. She expresses delight over the death of Sasori and later convinced Sasuke against killing Team Kakashi so they would thin out Akatsuki's membership.

An aspect of Orochimaru's personality is also her greatest weakness: her arrogance. She truly believed she was immortal at times, attacking recklessly against powerful opponents such as her former teacher and Itachi Uchiha. Both times, she was left crippled in some way since she either wanted to make her opponent suffer, like against Hiruzen, or because she was too uninformed to face her opponent, like against Itachi. Despite her distinct lack of morals, Orochimaru seems to be well-versed in psychological warfare and displays insightful wisdom when disparaging Tobirama for the actions resulting from his policies. She is also amusingly afraid of insects and bugs as seen during Naruto and Hinata's wedding.

Abilities Orochimaru is an exceptional shinobi, recognised as one of the strongest to ever exist. One of the only people who could compete against Hanzō in his prime, she became a Sannin.[44] At the same time, amongst her team, Orochimaru stood out the most in sheer aptitude as a natural prodigy and the best of her generation,[45] earning praise from even Hashirama Senju.[46] Easily Kage-calibre, Orochimaru was once a candidate to be Fourth Hokage. Her power is feared throughout the world, such that Akatsuki, which she was once a member, saw her as a threat.[47] Following the Konoha invasion, while failing, Orochimaru's actions left the village crippled for years and the Third Hokage dead. Even crippled and gradually weakening, Orochimaru remained extremely formidable, able to compete against either of her fellow Sannin (albeit with Tsunade being mentally hampered by her fear of blood and Jiraiya unable to properly infuse her chakra)[48] and even toy with a Version 2 jinchūriki respectively.[49] She would later regain her original strength upon undoing the seal that prevented her access to her arms.[50] In the anime, she easily overwhelmed an Inner of Kara, despite their monstrous might and Shinobi-Ware modifications

Chakra and Physical Prowess Orochimaru's killing intent was powerful enough to paralyze Kakashi with fear. Orochimaru has large reserves of strong chakra, powerful enough to stir up winds and crack stone.[52][53] Likewise, the intensity of her killing intent can reduce most foes petrified in fear. She can absorb chakra through physical contact, which also grants her their skills and knowledge.[54] Her chakra control is very advanced, excelling in various chakra applications. Even with her hands sealed, leaving her unable to perform handsigns, she can use various powerful techniques with ease. Orochimaru is very adept in taijutsu, able to overwhelm Sasuke in Part I despite his Sharingan-enhanced clarity. She is very strong, able to knock down a tree with a single kick,[55] and temporarily stunned a Four-Tailed Naruto with her punch.[49] She is also blazingly fast, able to move with such sudden change in direction to leave her opponent's disoriented.

Body Modifications In her quest for immortality and the perfect body, Orochimaru gained numerous modifications over the years. She can heal from most damage in short periods of time. For more grievous injuries, like bisection, she can reconnect herself or regurgitate a new, fully-healed body. Orochimaru's body is also able to stretch and manipulate its form for greater manoeuvrability. Her durability allows her to endure being stabbed by the giant Sword of Totsuka and shrug the damage off, and even resist multiple solidly-landed enhanced punches from the already-super strong Tsunade essentially unharmed.[56]

Orochimaru's modifications have resulted in her true form becoming a giant white snake and a body composed of many smaller snakes that can attack. Its blood is poisonous, evaporating in the air to paralyse all who inhales it. This form is used for the Living Corpse Reincarnation, letting her transfer her soul and physical essence into a new body by swallowing that person whole, thereby gaining control of all the new body's abilities while retaining her previous abilities and extending her lifespan. This can only be used once every three years. The souls of the bodies she has taken remain in Orochimaru's subconscious and she can modify her body as she sees fit.

Ninjutsu Orochimaru's depth of knowledge and skill in ninjutsu is greater than any other shinobi in history,[60] leading to her wielding a vast and unmatched arsenal of styles and techniques. Her proficiency with the Transformation Technique can let her stay undetected for long periods; her fūinjutsu skill includes the ability to use the Five Elements Seal to seal off a person's chakra; she can summon Rashōmon gates to protect herself from enemy attacks; she can hide within surfaces to avoid damage, or use juinjutsu to temporarily paralyse targets.[61] The anime shows Orochimaru's advanced prowess in clone techniques,[62] medical ninjutsu,[63] space–time ninjutsu,[64] and barrier ninjutsu.

Intelligence Orochimaru has acquired a vast amount of information of the shinobi world from her time with organisations such as Root and Akatsuki, having set up a network of fully supplied hideouts throughout various countries. She has great charisma, enough to manipulate people into becoming her willing servants, providing insight into their past and promising them power in order to gain their loyalty. In battle, she can quickly deduce the workings of an enemy's fighting style and respond accordingly.
