The cavern was massive, its walls towering high over your head, wickedly sharp stalactites hanging low. The dim blue and purple glow of bioluminescent moss filled the cavern, and the quiet bubbling of an underground stream was calming, having led you to this area in the cave system to begin with. Your flashlight illuminated the rocky walls in harsh white, possibly for the first time in centuries that this place had been touched by mankind. The thought of being the first modern human to encounter this place made you buzz with excitement.

Approaching the stream, you squatted down and shined your flashlight into its depths. It looked relatively shallow, the shores damp with the same peculiar glowing moss that painted the walls. Following the stream with your eyes led you to notice a large, slick purple... vine?

Curled up around one of the stalagmites on the floor, the strange-looking vine shimmered with some kind of thick mucus, a rich purple the color of amethysts. A thousand questions crossed your mind. What was a plant doing this deep underground, away from sunlight? How was it surviving? Why did it look so... slimy?

You traced the "vine" with your flashlight, illuminating rest of the strange organism. What you thought was one turned out to be several long, thick purple appendages with dozens of paler circular suckers on their undersides—the tentacles of an octopus came to mind. What you thought was several turned out to be even more, a still mass of slimy tentacles that, upon further inspection, seemed to be slowly, rhythmically... breathing.

You stumbled backwards in shock, nearly tripping over your own feet before catching yourself on your hands. You were not dealing with this sci-fi shit today. Yet as you reached for your flashlight (which you had inconveniently dropped upon seeing the creature), one of the tentacles moved at lightning speed, coiling tightly around your wrist.
