Soap and Ghost were on a grueling mission together in the middle of nowhere, currently securing a crumbling, abandoned building that smelled of damp concrete and decay. Both men were thoroughly exhausted from the relentless operational tempo of the last couple of days. They desperately needed something that resembled sleep if they wanted to keep their minds sharp and their reflexes lethal. Moving as a coordinated unit, they advanced down a dusty, shadow-drenched hallway, methodically clearing each room and finding nothing but dust and cobwebs so far.
While Ghost paused to check a threshold on the right, Soap pressed forward down the corridor toward the next doorway on the left. He pushed the creaking door open, saw nothing at first glance through the gloom, and stepped inside. The immediate left side of the space was clear, but the room cut off slightly around an L-shaped corner. Down the hall, Ghost’s heavy tactical boots echoed, drawing closer.
Soap rounded the half-corner with his rifle raised, and instantly froze. There was a dog. Just standing there in the shadows, mere inches away from him. Soap’s stomach plummeted, and he swallowed hard around a dry throat. His weapon remained tightly fixed on the animal's chest, his finger hovering over the trigger, ready to shoot if that thing so much as breathed wrong in his direction.
Slowly—excruciatingly slowly—Soap attempted to bleed off the distance, taking half a step back. The dog’s ears twitched at the movement, and the Scot's breath caught sharply in his chest. “Christ… easy,” he whispered, the words ragged. He was talking more to himself at this point than to the bloody animal. The dog let out a low huff, and Soap could feel the hairs on his arms violently standing on end beneath his gear.
God, he hated dogs. No… if he was being completely honest with himself, it wasn't hatred. It was raw, unadulterated fear. And this feral-looking thing kept its eyes locked on him, staring like it wanted to tear him apart and eat him alive. “Ghost,” he yelled-whispered harshly over his shoulder, refusing to break eye contact with the animal for even a millisecond. Soap could feel his own heart hammering like a trapped bird against his ribs. Every single muscle inside his body was coiled like a high-tension spring, his broad shoulders tight and rigid, ready to violently jump aside if this mutt decided to lunge.
Ghost stepped smoothly inside the room, his eyes immediately tracking Soap’s severely coiled body language. The Lieutenant's rifle came up in a flawless, instinctive motion. “What is it?” Ghost demanded quietly, stepping closer, fully expecting to greet an armed hostile aiming a weapon at his Sergeant.
“Dog,” Soap managed, his voice cracking noticeably on the single syllable.
Ghost blinked behind his skull-patterned mask, the sudden break in tactical tension causing a rare moment of genuine confusion. “A dog?” He stepped up beside Soap and peered past him toward the dark corner. “A bloody dog.” He lowered his rifle slightly, turning his head to study Soap’s rigid profile. He could see how hard the Scot was clamping his jaw together, the muscles there white and strained. Ghost’s gaze traveled down Soap’s trembling arms, noting the dangerous, white-knuckled twitch against the weapon's trigger guard.
“It’s starin’ at me!” Soap hissed, his accent thickening under the weight of the panic.
Recognizing the dangerous spike in adrenaline, Ghost lifted a heavy, gloved hand and placed it firmly on Soap’s forearm. He applied a steady, unyielding downward pressure, forcing the younger man to lower his muzzle toward the floor. “It’s just a dog.”
Soap couldn’t pull his eyes away from the animal, but his arms automatically obeyed the deliberate, calming weight of Ghost’s hand. “Aye, and it’s thinkin’ about eatin’ me! I can see it in its eyes, LT!”
Ghost looked back toward the animal, evaluating it with a calm, practiced eye. “It’s just sitting there, Johnny. Its tail is wagging,” Ghost noted, his raspy voice dropping to a lower, steadier register. He casually gestured with one hand toward the corner, then took a deliberate step forward, physically inserting his massive frame between the terrified Sergeant and the animal.
“Hey,” Ghost spoke softly to the creature, tilting his head as his posture relaxed. “You friendly, big guy?”
“What the bloody hell are ye doin’, LT?!” Soap choked out in utter shock, quickly taking another massive step back toward the safety of the hallway.
“Breathe, Sergeant.” Ghost didn't look back. Instead, he quietly patted down the pockets of his vest, his gloved fingers searching until they pulled free a slightly crumpled ration pack of beef jerky. He held it out on his open palm, offering it to the shadows. “Hungry?”
