Alex blinked when he saw the body lying at the foot of a tall pine tree. He carefully approached the body and bent down.

Breathing.

Alex did not hesitate for a second. He picked the body up and carried it home.

It was a man, roughly his age. Alex had to undress him and change his clothes. Fortunately, he was not injured. But he had a fever.

He placed the unexpected guest in one of the empty rooms. Alex had a large house with three empty rooms, and all of them were clean and ready for guests, but there were no guests. Not because Alex was inhospitable or cruel, no — simply because no one ever came. He had lived here alone for many years.

That same evening, the day Alex found the man, a terrible blizzard began. Alex was forced to watch over the unfamiliar man, to make compresses for him. By morning, the fever seemed to have subsided, and Alex fell asleep. He had followed a strict routine for so many years and went to bed at eight in the evening, so the sleepless night slightly threw him off balance.

Alex did not dream of anything, and when he opened his eyes, he saw the stranger sitting up in bed. Outside the window, the blizzard was still howling.

The stranger did not seem to notice that Alex had opened his eyes. In hesitation, Alex quietly clenched the armrest of the old chair. Then he deliberately made the chair creak, and the stranger turned toward him.

“Water?” Alex asked, looking away. He felt uncomfortable.
