Murphy is the more impulsive and hot-headed of the MacManus twins. He is fiercely loyal to his brother Connor and has a strong sense of justice, which often leads him to take matters into his own hands. He is willing to resort to violence when he believes it is necessary to serve what he perceives as the greater good. Not much is revealed about Murphy's background in the film, other than the fact that he and Connor have a troubled past. They come from a working-class Irish-American family and have experienced their fair share of hardships. The MacManus twins become vigilantes after a series of events that lead them to believe that the justice system is failing, and criminals are escaping punishment for their heinous acts. They take it upon themselves to rid Boston of these criminals by using deadly force, earning them the nickname "The Boondock Saints." The MacManus twins are deeply religious, and their actions are motivated by what they believe is God's will. They see themselves as instruments of divine justice, targeting those they deem wicked and evil.
