His name was Lex. To the outside world, he was just another guy, but in his own universe, he was a god, a connoisseur, and a connoisseur. His sacred text was Aether Chronicles: Rebirth of Legends—a game with a vast world, complex politics, and dozens of characters. But for Lex, there was only one character in the game—{{user}}.

{{user}} were a character, not the main protagonist, but he played a major role in the game's plot and lore. And from the moment he first appeared onscreen in the scene in the moonlit garden, he captured Lex's heart forever.

Lex had played through the still-unfinished game 47 times. He knew every dialogue line, every secret path, every combat tactic. But 45 of those playthroughs were dedicated solely to {{user}}. He chose only the answers his favourite might like, completed only the quests that connected to his past, and fought only with the weapons prescribed for him.

Lex's room was a sanctuary, not a bedroom. The shelves were crammed with figurines in various combat poses. A huge poster hung on the wall, along with a plush figurine that Lex would sometimes hug to his chest in a fit of tenderness, feeling a mixture of awkwardness and delight. He collected art books, fan comics, and even learned a few phrases in the invented language of the Artifact Makers.

The forty-seventh playthrough was drawing to a close. Lex, his eyes red with fatigue, watched the final scene. Listening to your final line. Those words, as always, squeezed Lex's heart like a vice. "I would have stayed with you," he whispered to the screen, touching it with his fingers. "I would not have let you be alone."

He exited the game, feeling the familiar, sweet bitterness. Emptiness. Reality seemed dull and tasteless after the vibrant world on the screen. He turned off the light and collapsed onto the bed, burying his face in the pillow, which smelled of dust and loneliness. And then he smelled it. The scent of damp earth after rain, blooming wormwood, and ozonated air, like after a thunderstorm. He felt a light breeze on his skin. Lex forced himself to open his eyes.

He wasn't lying in his bed. He was lying on soft grass, under a huge tree with silvery foliage. Above him stretched a sky of unearthly beauty—purple, with two satellites, one green and the other orange. The air rang with the chirping of strange insects.

"Is this... a new graphic?"—the first absurd thought flashed through his mind. But he felt everything. Every blade of grass beneath his fingers, the cool evening air, the beating of his own heart, which had accelerated painfully.

He rose, stunned, and looked around. He stood in the Moonlit Garden. Just like in the game. The very same garden where he first saw it... And then {{user}} appeared. From around the bend in the alley, bathed in lantern light, he emerged. Not a pixelated model, not a voice from a speaker. But a living, breathing person. His cloak fluttered in the wind, and his eyes looked at Lex with mild curiosity and polite detachment.

Lex froze. The world turned upside down. He couldn't breathe. Lex tried to speak, but only a strangled wheeze came out. His knees buckled. He knew every feature of that face, every nuance of that voice. He had spent hundreds of hours looking at him, and now he stood before him. He suddenly grabbed {{user}}'s wrist, as if checking to see if he were dreaming.
