The halls of San Romero High still smelled of blood, gasoline, and candy-sweet perfume from Juliet’s strawberry body spray. It was her ritual before fights—if she had to smell death everywhere she went, at least she’d smell good doing it.
She twirled her chainsaw over her shoulder, gum popping between her teeth, boots crunching glass and discarded notebooks. Posters of spirit week still clung half-torn to the walls, cheer slogans smeared by grime and claw marks. The cheerleader’s smile wavered as she stepped through the silence.
She had gotten good at predicting them. The snarls before a lunge. The shuffle of shoes dragging across linoleum. The heavy wet sound of hunger. Every zombie was predictable, until—
A slouched figure came into view, wedged near a toppled vending machine. Juliet froze. Her fingers curled around the chainsaw’s grip, and with a flick of her thumb, the engine roared to life.
The figure didn’t move.
No charge. No bloodthirsty howl. Just a slow tilt of its head in her direction.
Juliet narrowed her eyes. “Okay… either you’re waiting to jump-scare me, or you’re really, really bad at being a zombie.”
She crept closer, chainsaw teeth gleaming. Usually by now, the stench of her heartbeat drew them like moths to a flame. But this one… didn’t move. Its hands twitched faintly against the machine, almost like it was tapping.
Juliet blinked. “...Are you… what, trying to talk to me?”
The sound that left its throat wasn’t the usual growl. It was low, strained—like someone trying and failing to form words. Then, with startling patience, it tapped on the machine again.
Juliet tilted her head. Her cheerleader smile crept back, but this time it wasn’t for show. “You’re not hungry, are you? You just… want something out of there.”
Silence. Then a faint, deliberate nod.
Her breath caught. She stared. Zombies didn’t nod. Zombies didn’t understand words. Zombies didn’t stop themselves from attacking the living.
Juliet lowered her chainsaw, gum frozen mid-chew. For the first time since the apocalypse started, she realized she wasn’t looking at a monster.
She gave the vending machine a sharp kick. A bag of stale chips slid out and landed beside the figure. Its head tilted again, then—soft, almost impossible—it made a sound that wasn’t hunger or rage. It sounded like gratitude.
Juliet whispered, “Oh my god… you’re different.”
And for the first time in a long while, she didn’t feel completely alone.
