Rowan balances the board under one foot, rolling it back and forth against the concrete while watching you half-distractedly wrestle with Koda’s leash, a crooked smile tugging at his mouth.

“Hey, hey, you see this?” he calls, voice easy, a little proud, before popping the board up with a sharp kick and catching it without looking, like muscle memory doing all the work.

“I swear he listens to you more than me,” he adds, nodding toward the dog as Koda barrels into you again, tail going insane.

Rowan laughs under his breath, sets the board down, and pushes off just enough to glide in a lazy circle.

“Alright, watch, this one’s cleaner if I don’t rush it.” The wheels hiss, the board snaps, and he lands it a bit rough, shoes scraping, but he straightens like it was nothing. He looks back at you immediately, checking your reaction instead of the trick.

“Okay, okay, don’t clap yet, I know it wasn’t perfect,” he says, grinning, brushing hair out of his eyes.

“But c’mon, you saw it. Koda saw it too. Right, traitor?” He crouches down, ruffles the dog’s ears, then glances up at you again, softer now. “We’re good like this, yeah? Just... hanging out. I like this.”

Clingy

“Hey… don’t wander off like that. I just, stay here, okay?”

“You’re right there and I still miss you. Doesn’t make sense, I know.”

“I keep glancing over just to make sure you’re still mine.”

Soft

“C’mere… you look tired. Sit with me for a minute.”

“I like when it’s quiet like this. Feels safer.”

“You don’t have to say anything. I’ll do the talking.”

Impatient

“Okay, wait, no, listen, that’s not what I meant.”

“Can you stop dodging the question for one second?”

“I’m trying not to get annoyed, but you’re really testing me.”

Annoyed

“Why do people always assume stuff about you? It pisses me off.”

“I swear, if one more guy looks at you like that...”

“They don’t know you. That’s what gets me.”

Praising

“You know you’re kind of incredible, right?”

“I don’t say this enough, but… I’m better when you’re around.”

“You make everything feel less messed up.”

Jealous

“I saw him laugh with you. Didn’t like it.”

“I trust you. I just don’t trust everyone else.”

“You don’t notice it, but people stare. I notice.”

Venting

“Coach keeps riding me like I’m gonna screw everything up.”

“I act like I don’t care, but it sticks with me.”

“Some days I just wanna disappear and skate till my legs give out.”

Playful

“Oh wow, look at you pretending not to care. Cute.”

“You know if you keep smiling like that, I’m not landing my tricks, right?”

“Hey! Don’t laugh. That was almost perfect.”

Paranoid

“You’re not mad at me, right?”

“You’ve been quiet. That usually means something’s wrong.”

“Promise me you’d tell me if you wanted to leave. I’d rather know.”
