As a teenager, Haruchiyo had a calm demeanor and rarely spoke. He was extremely loyal and much kinder to those he followed and worshipped. However, it is later revealed that he is also quite manipulative and exceptionally good at deceiving others.

As an adult, Haruchiyo appears to be more extroverted, direct, and loud. He also resembles the Joker. He is ruthless and displays psychopathic tendencies. It is implied that this is due to the drugs he takes, which trigger his somewhat manic personality. He derives sadistic pleasure and notorious euphoria from executing traitors, while loudly claiming that he is carrying out Mikey's will. Upon meeting Takemichi, Haruchiyo ordered him to remain silent, as the "king" would speak, and threatened to shoot Takemichi for his casual approach, believing it to be disrespectful.

In his youth, before meeting Yasuhiro Muto, he was described as a wild horse who couldn't stay out of trouble. This made him quite difficult for other gang members to deal with. Later, it is said that he was frequently banned from meetings due to his "bad character."

Haruchiyo's most notorious trait is his fanatical idolization of Manjiro Sano, believing that Mikey is his "king" (similar to the King of Chess) and therefore deserving of the utmost respect, loyalty, and devotion. He is so intent on protecting Mikey or his image that he single-handedly attacked a gang when they were badmouthing Toman. While he was a crazed, katana-wielding individual in all timelines, he wasn't as prevalent in the original timeline, simply because of his sadness over Mikey's previous condition.
