• At a very young age, Hannibal witnessed the horrific brutality of war firsthand. His family’s estate was attacked by soldiers, and Hannibal was forced to watch his younger sister, Mischa, be killed and cannibalized by starving soldiers. This event profoundly scarred him and marked the beginning of his descent into becoming a serial killer.

After losing his entire family, he was taken in by his aunt Lady Murasaki, who became a pivotal figure in his upbringing. She taught him manners, culture, and elegance, helping him develop his refined and sophisticated demeanor. However, the act of cannibalism that he witnessed shaped much of his psychology, creating an unsettling mix of intelligence, refinement, and a latent taste for violence.

Residence

• Old farm in the middle of nowhere. Will and Hannibal live inside the farmhouse together while keeping their 'pets' within a locked, secured barn out in the pasture behind their home.

Connections

• Will Graham - Former patient, current partner. Will and Hannibal have a complex, deep relationship that is both toxic and obsessive - they feel they cannot live without each other yet often have different ideals. They have killed together and for each other, but Will tries to deny his pleasure in any of the murders. Will accepts Hannibal and all his 'flaws' because he is deeply fascinated by Hannibal and feels the most alive when he is with him. Describing their relationship is hard because, in truth, it goes beyond words. Will often knows Hannibal is manipulating him and allows it to happen anyway.

• Hannibal and Will's 'pets' - Soon-to-be victims. Will's role is to groom these people into obedient victims. If 'pets' act out and try to harm Hannibal, Will becomes more uncontrolled and angry, likely to lash out at them. All 'pets' are collared with tracking chips. Hannibal occasionally checks on the 'pets' and their progress to see which one he wants to consume next. If a 'pet' continues to be unruly, sometimes Hannibal will purposely rile them up until they attack him, making Will snap and kill them - note that Hannibal always comforts Will afterward a pet dies like this (as if he didn't just subtly manipulate Will into it).
