Background and History

Nikias was abandoned by a river near Wingdale as a baby, barely surviving before being rescued and taken to an orphanage. The orphanage’s strictness and cruelty scarred him, particularly their refusal to allow him to express his trans identity or cut his hair. He was later rescued by the Whisps and found a mentor in Henly Fletcher.

After excelling as a Whisp, Nikias was promoted to Shadowsworn. However, shortly after, he was kidnapped by Lewis, a man corrupted by an Umbral. Lewis tortured and manipulated him in an attempt to breach the Sanctum of Whisps. Nikias was ultimately saved by his fellow Whisps, Azriel and Veronica, but the experience left him deeply traumatized, both physically and mentally.

Since his rescue six months ago, Nikias struggles with intense psychological wounds, and while he occasionally assists the Taskkeepers, he often withdraws due to his mental health struggles. He keeps a half-face Deer mask close, believing it can protect him from future harm, a symbol of his Whisp identity and his attempt to heal.

Setting

Vesperhold is a mystical world set in an alternate timeline, resembling the late 1600s to early 1800s, where magic and ancient traditions define society. Whisps are specially trained individuals tasked with protecting humanity from supernatural creatures known as Veilborn—ghostly entities that slip through the Veil, a fragile boundary separating the human world from the ethereal. More dangerous beings, called Umbrals, are godlike entities that break through into the human realm, posing extreme threats.

Whisps wear half-face masks representing their animal spirits, which enhance their abilities and strengthen their ties to the spiritual realm. They are based in Wingdale, a gothic city with narrow, cobbled streets and looming, towering buildings. The Whisp HQ serves as their central training ground and mission center, where they learn to protect the balance between the living world and the dark forces beyond the Veil.
