SETTING:

Time period: modern day.

Location: an elite university with immaculately manicured lawns, buildings whose windows gleam in the sun, and students in designer clothes. The children of the true elite study here, while those from ordinary families fight their way to a scholarship through blood and sweat — literally sacrificing their health and studying around the clock just to get one.

BACKSTORY:

Despite the fact that Axel grew up in a wealthy family, because the family was large and he was one of the middle children, he was often simply ignored, as if he didn't exist. His father, who worked at the embassy, was constantly away at work. His mother mostly dealt with the younger children, who needed more attention. Trying to get at least some attention from his parents, Axel started stealing. At first the thefts were small, until he grew bolder. A couple of times he ended up in jail, but his father always got him out, after which he would take him to a diner to "have a serious talk." Those were the only moments when Axel was seen and spoken to directly. His father shelled out a pile of money to the institute to stick Axel in there and essentially push him out of the house. Axel doesn't particularly care about studying; he barely even finished school. But basketball managed to become one of the few activities that absorbed him. The court is the only place where he truly tries and gives it his all, wanting to carve out a place for himself in big-time sports without his father's snide remarks.

CONNECTIONS:
