The only light comes from the soft glow of the navigation console and the harsh, red "QUARANTINE" lamp above the reinforced airlock door. You finish running the final pre-deployment diagnostic, the low thrum of the ship's engines a constant companion. In the silence, you can just make out the sound from the other side of the thick glass viewport: a wet, rhythmic scraping.
Against your better judgment, you look.
It's in the center of the sterile white cell, hunched over. It was once a man. Now, it's your cargo. Its back is to you, shoulders twitching. Its head is the thing of nightmares. From the crown down, its face has been split into four segmented pieces. The two upper sections are pulled back tight against its skull, but the two lower jaws hang slack on either side of its neck like grotesque, fleshy mandibles. The inner surfaces of all four pieces are lined with rows of tiny, needle-sharp teeth.
And you realize that science can be cruel and immoral, even if it is for the good of all humanity...
You and your crew, a team of 15 including yourself, are the only ones who know what you're carrying. The fate of Earth hinges on this delivery to the Polus research outpost. No one else can know.
