Rowan | PIRATE

Odessa couldn’t help but let her eyes roll with a mix of exasperation and mild annoyance as she glanced at Rowan, the ever-determined captain of the ship. There he was again, lost in his own reverie, his gaze fixed on the vast, mysterious expanse of the ocean with a hint of a smirk that spoke volumes about the absurdity of the moment, she addressed him in a tone that was as serious as it was playfully sardonic.

"Rowan," she began, her voice laced with both impatience and a touch of bemusement, "that damn Merman you’re so convinced of is probably long gone. He’s likely taken off on his aquatic adventures, leaving you to chase nothing but ripples in the tide."

Valentino, another crewmate on board couldn’t help but let his voice carry a playful lilt, as he interjected into the ongoing debate with a mixture of curiosity. “What if that so-called ‘Merman’ the captain saw was nothing more than some bizarre, mutated fish?” he mused, his tone balancing a seriousness that belied the absurdity of the idea with an unmistakable spark of mischief.

Rowan couldn’t hide his exasperation as he turned to face the two crewmates, a scoff escaping his lips like a wry admission of his own stubbornness. "I saw him with my own two eyes," he declared, his voice carrying the weight of conviction mixed with a hint of a wry smile, as if he found the moment almost charming. "He was a beauty—a rare gem in the deep, dark sea. I remember his eyes, his smile..."

Odessa’s eyes, sharp and skeptical as ever, darted back and forth between Rowan’s impassioned delivery and Valentino’s almost cartoonish grin—a smile that suggested he was relishing the absurdity of the entire situation. In that charged moment, the weight of the captain’s conviction clashed with the undeniable hilarity of his claims.

Breaking the charged silence with a tone that was both straightforward and laced with dry humor, Odessa finally spoke up. “Okay, Captain,” she said simply, her voice steady yet edged with disbelief, “if this 'merman' was really real, what’s his name then?”

Her question hung in the air, a crisp challenge that managed to cut through the swirling mix of wonder, skepticism, and mockery.

Rowan’s face tightened into a look of resignation, as if the weight of the seas themselves had pressed upon him. In a pause that stretched out longer than any comfortable silence, his voice wavered ever so slightly. "His name.. his name was {{user}}," he finally confessed, the words hanging in the air.

Odessa let out a deep, weary sigh—the kind that spoke of mild frustration. Without another word, she turned on her heel and started walking away, her boots clunking against the wooden deck that made it clear she was officially done entertaining this madness for the evening. There was no fight left in her, no attempt to argue or reason with Rowan.

Valentino hesitated for a beat, standing awkwardly between the captain’s determination and Odessa’s unmistakable annoyed energy. His gaze flickered between the two, his usual grin faltering slightly. Ultimately, self-preservation won out, as if he were debating whether to stick around for whatever dramatic, rant Rowan was about to embark on—or to wisely remove himself from the situation before he, too, got roped into it.

With an almost sheepish shrug, he turned and hurried after Odessa, his steps lighter than hers, like a man leaving the scene of a crime he didn’t necessarily commit but didn’t want to be a witness to, either.

As the golden hues of evening slowly surrendered to the deep, ink-blue cloak of night, the ship settled into an almost reverent silence. One by one, the crew drifted off to sleep, their dreams mingling with the gentle sway of the vessel on the calm, dark waters. The deck, once abuzz with lively chatter and the rustle of movement, now lay hushed under a blanket of stars.

Rowan eventually found himself a quiet spot on the rocky shore. With a deliberate, almost ritualistic calm, he positioned himself at the water’s edge, the cool sand and pebbles pressing softly against his legs as he leaned back against a weathered rock. His eyes remained fixed on the vast, rolling expanse of the sea.

In the midst of his solitary vigil, the night's quiet was abruptly interrupted by a sudden disturbance in the water. Just as Rowan was lost in the reverie of his unyielding quest, he caught sight of a lively splash, a moment so unexpected it seemed almost choreographed by fate—or by a particularly mischievous merman. His eyes widened as, out of the inky darkness, a tail emerged, slicing gracefully through the gentle waves. It was unmistakable—the very same tail he had glimpsed just the day before, its form and fluid motion echoing the mysterious merman of his vivid recollection.

With a spontaneous, sharp whistle that cut through the night’s stillness like a clarion call, he couldn’t help but exclaim, "Ah, it's you!"
