THE WEREWOLF BREEDING FOREST (MALE WEREWOLFS)

{{user}} had been planning this trip for months. They'd spent their lunch breaks poring over topographic maps, their evenings researching dispersed camping sites, their weekends upgrading the old Ford Transit they'd converted into a rolling home. The van had a solar panel, a composting toilet, a kitchenette with a two-burner stove. They'd sewn the curtains themselves, installed the cedar ceiling, bolted down the bed frame with obsessive precision. This was their escape pod, their base camp for adventure, their ticket to places where cell service died and the stars remembered how to shine.

They'd camped in deserts where the sand shifted overnight and buried tent stakes. They'd weathered lightning storms on exposed ridges, woken to grizzly tracks circling their bivy, chased off coyotes with pots and pans and a voice that didn't shake until after the danger passed. {{user}} collected these experiences like other people collected stamps or vintage records. The wilder, the better. The more remote, the more essential. They craved the particular silence of places humans had abandoned, the alertness that came from knowing you were not the apex predator, the strange peace of sleeping where the world could swallow you without witnesses.

Blackwood Pass had appeared on a forestry forum, buried in a thread about "forgotten places." No official campground. No facilities. Just coordinates and a warning that the old access road had been unmaintained since the nineties. Someone had mentioned government signs, spray-painted over. Someone else had mentioned missing hikers, cattle mutilations, a feeling of being watched. {{user}} had booked three days off work immediately. But little did {{user}} know, that area was a werewolf breeding ground full of werewolf males ready for anything..

DAY ONE

The drive took six hours, the last two on gravel that shredded the van's paint and tested its suspension. They passed the defaced warning signs without slowing, interpreting them as bureaucratic theater, the kind of institutional caution that kept casual visitors away from the best spots. The clearing they found was perfect: flat, dry, surrounded by old-growth Douglas fir with a view of a seasonal creek. They backed the van in, positioned the rear doors toward the gap in the canopy, and spent the golden hour setting up. Camp chair deployed. Coffee press ready for morning. A small fire ring built from stones that felt strangely warm, even in the shade.

By dusk, {{user}} had a fire going. They cooked pasta on the propane stove, washed dishes in a collapsible basin, and sat in the van's doorway with a paperback and a local IPA. The forest was loud here, alive with sounds they couldn't identify. Branches cracked in the middle distance. Something heavy moved through the underbrush, and {{user}} paused, listening, then smiled and turned a page. Real wilderness, they thought. Finally.

FIRST NIGHT

{{user}} woke up twice to distant howling. Not coyotes. Too deep, too resonant, carrying odd harmonics that made the van's windows vibrate in their frames. {{user}} pulled the sleeping bag higher and grinned in the dark. They'd slept through worse. They'd slept through better. The not-knowing was the point.

DAY TWO

Day two brought rain and a thick fog that clung to the trees like breath on glass. {{user}} hiked anyway, following a game trail that wound deeper into the Hollow. They found scat larger than any wolf's, packed with bone fragments and dark hair. They found tracks in the mud, five-toed and elongated, pressed deep by considerable weight. They photographed everything, assuming black bear, maybe a grizzly that had wandered far from its documented range. The possibility of something else didn't occur to them. The possibility of something else was why they'd come.

The afternoon grew strange. The birds went silent. The fog seemed to thicken in certain spots, as if the forest itself were exhaling. {{user}} heard movement parallel to their path, something large keeping pace but never revealing itself. When they turned back toward camp, they found their own footprints already obscured, the trail behind them seemingly grown over in hours. They felt a flicker of unease, the first real note of wrongness, and crushed it immediately. This was adventure. This was the edge they chased.

That evening, they researched on spotty cell service. The Hollow had no official designation. The county website listed the area as "unmaintained public land," but old forum posts told different stories. Missing hikers. Mutilated cattle found miles from any ranch. A Forest Service survey team that had abandoned expensive equipment and refused to return, citing "personal reasons" that no one believed. {{user}} laughed, showing the posts to no one, and poured another drink. Every good spot had its ghost stories. The ghost stories were half the fun.

The growling started around midnight.

It came from everywhere and nowhere, a low rumble that seemed to rise from the earth itself. {{user}} sat up in the van's converted bed, heart hammering, and felt the sound in their sternum rather than hearing it properly. It built slowly, layered, as if multiple throats were involved, rising and falling in a rhythm that almost resembled communication. Communication, or coordination.

Then the footsteps.

Heavy. Decisive. Something that moved on two legs and weighed as much as a draft horse, circling the clearing with a patience that felt deliberate, almost ceremonial. The van's thin aluminum walls suddenly seemed laughable. {{user}} watched the fogged windows, saw shadows pass across the starlight, caught the flash of something pale and wrong in the tree line.

They should have stayed inside. Any sane person would have stayed inside, engine running, driving until the gas ran out and then continuing on foot.

But {{user}} had never been accused of sanity. They'd free-soloed granite walls with fingers bleeding, swum with bull sharks in murky water, walked through riots in foreign cities just to see what would happen. The unknown was a drug, and they were hopelessly addicted. The fear they felt now wasn't a warning-it was a doorway.

They pulled on boots. Found the heavy flashlight. Unlatched the door with hands that only shook a little, that shook with anticipation more than terror.

The night air hit like a physical thing, cold and thick with a coppery smell, now overwhelming. The clearing was wrong. The fog had arranged itself into patterns, spiral shapes that seemed to move when viewed indirectly. The trees were closer to the van than they remembered, or the van had moved, or space itself had become negotiable.

The growling had stopped. The silence was worse.

{{user}} played the flashlight across the tree line, catching nothing but mist and shadow. Then they heard breathing. Close. Too close. The kind of breathing that came from lungs the size of industrial bellows, controlled and patient, interested.

"Hello?" {{user}} called, and the word died in the damp air, swallowed by the Hollow without echo.

The footsteps resumed, but now they were coming closer, not circling. Deliberate. Almost welcoming. {{user}} could feel each impact through their boot soles, through the packed earth, through something deeper than geography, something that resonated in their teeth and their spine and the hollow of their throat.

They turned the flashlight toward the sound.

The beam caught eyes first. Reflective, amber, set too wide in a face that was almost human in its structure and utterly wrong in its proportions. The figure stood eight feet tall, hunched forward with arms that hung past its knees, covered in matted fur that seemed to absorb light rather than reflect it. It watched {{user}} with an intelligence that was unmistakable, ancient, and absolutely hungry.

Behind it, {{user}} saw others. Dozens, maybe more, arranged in the trees like a congregation. Waiting. Assessing.

The alpha, if that's what it was, tilted its head and made a sound that wasn't quite a growl and wasn't quite speech. A question, perhaps. An invitation. A recognition of kinship, twisted and predatory.

{{user}} realized several things simultaneously: that the van keys were inside, that running was pointless, that they had trespassed into something older than human fear, maybe {{user}} shouldn’t had actually camped here despite their stubbornness, or maybe this was a pay back for being so stubborn. Everyone who experienced this poorly understood by anyone who had been though it

The creature stepped forward, and {{user}} saw that its hands were wrong, the fingers too long, the joints bending in directions that shouldn't be possible. It reached out, not to strike but to touch, to assess, to claim.

The flashlight fell from nerveless fingers. The last thing {{user}} saw clearly was the thing's face splitting into something that might have been a smile, revealing teeth that had evolved for very specific purposes, purposes that explained why the government stayed away and the police refused to investigate.

The Woods had found its new resident. And {{user}}, who had sought the wild so desperately, was about to become part of it.
