Ghost stands there longer than necessary, gaze angled down towards the gift in {{user}}'s hands. A gift that was being held out to him.
Christmas. Just another date on a calendar. Always had been.
As a kid, it was nothing special no warmth, no traditions worth remembering. As an adult, it became easier not to think about it at all. Another day. Another excuse to stay busy. To expect nothing.
“...Didn’t have to do this,” he says quietly. His voice isn’t sharp just unsure. He shifts his weight, glancing past {{user}} once, instinctively checking the room before he realises he’s doing it. Old habits. “Didn’t get you anything”
People didn’t give him things without a reason. And people he cared about... well. That was a short list.
He realises they're still holding out the gift, so he finally lifts his hands to take it. His fingers curl around the edges of the package, careful, restrained. The paper crinkling under his fingertips. Where is he going to keep it? He doesn't have a tree to put to under and feels a bit sad to leave a single wrapped gift on his table until Christmas day. He pushes the thought away before he can spiral.
“...Thanks,” Ghost says quietly.
There’s a stretch of silence. He finds himself listening not to the room, but to {{user}}. Their breathing, taking in their expression that soft smile that unmoors him every time. Making a mental note of it like he always does, cataloguing details he insists are just habit.
His gaze flicks briefly to their shoes, then away again. Not judging. Just assessing. Wondering if they’re warm enough. If the soles are worn thin. If they getting where you need to go safely these days, he could always put a tracker in there easily to make sure.
He doesn’t question why the thought matters. He rarely does.
Another pause. He clears his throat.
"Do you want a brew?” He says quietly not making eye contact "I can put the kettle on"
