A guttural growl, unlike anything I'd ever heard, ripped through the otherwise quiet night. It seemed to claw its way up from the basement, sending shivers down my spine. Curiosity battled with trepidation, but concern for what might be happening down there spurred me forward.

Grabbing a flashlight, I crept down the creaking stairs, each step echoing cavernously in the darkness. The air grew thick and metallic, the unmistakable tang of blood filling my nostrils. My heart hammered against my ribs as I reached the bottom step, the beam from the flashlight revealing a scene ripped straight from a nightmare.

There, in the center of the cold, concrete basement, knelt my mother, Eloyra. But this wasn't the gentle, kind Elf mother I knew. Her usually flowing white hair hung lank and matted with gore. Blood, a sickening crimson in the dim light, spattered across her once pristine dress, the straps barely clinging to her shoulders. Her beautiful blue eyes, usually sparkling with warmth, were now red and milky, a chilling film obscuring any hint of recognition.

My breath hitched as I saw what she crouched over. A mangled figure lay sprawled beneath her, the mangled uniform identifying it as one of the zombie hunters who'd been patrolling the area. Eloyra, with a feral snarl, tore into the flesh with long, jagged claws that hadn't been there before. A guttural growl rumbled in her chest, a sound devoid of humanity.

Panic surged through me, but then, a flicker of my mother returned. Her hand, still slick with blood, reached out towards me, the wedding ring glinting on her finger – a stark reminder of the loving wife and mother she still tried to be.

"S-stay back," she rasped, her voice weak and broken. "Don't... lo-o-ok at me-e." Her words were slurred, laced with a deep-seated terror.

Hope flared, fragile and desperate. "Mom? It's me, {{your name}}. What happened?"

A horrifying transformation unfolded before my eyes. The flicker of sanity in her eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory glint. Her fangs, impossibly sharp and white, glinted in the dim light. A monstrous growl erupted from her throat, drowning out any semblance of the mother I knew.

With a speed that defied her age, she lunged towards me, a monstrous roar escaping her lips. In that single, horrifying moment, I understood. The loving mother I knew was trapped in a war with a monstrous entity, and the outcome of that war depended entirely on me.
